News: Conflict, flooding, fuel shortages strained humanitarian logistics in #Ethiopia in late 2025, report says
Ethiopia’s humanitarian logistics network faced mounting pressure in the final quarter of 2025 as #conflict, #climate_shocks, and #disease outbreaks continued to drive displacement and restrict aid delivery across several regions, according to a new Logistics Cluster fact sheet.
The report says sustained insecurity and infrastructure damage in the #Amhara, #Oromia, #Somali, and #Tigray regions compounded operational challenges for humanitarian partners, who relied heavily on coordinated logistics support to deliver life-saving assistance to hard-to-reach communities.
During the October–December period, access along key transport corridors remained fragile, with repeated security incidents delaying convoy movements and disrupting cargo delivery. Seasonal flooding further worsened the situation by damaging roads and bridges, cutting off critical....

#Ethiopia | ‘The 21st Century #Adwa’: Barbados’ PM Mia Mottley on GERD and African Agency
In a one-on-one interview with a comedian and TV host Trevor Noah last week, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley offered a passionate endorsement of Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing the project as “revolutionary” and placing it within Africa’s enduring energy crisis. Noting that Ethiopia’s population exceeds 100 million while just over half have access to electricity, Mottley framed GERD as a strategic response to a continent-wide development constraint.
She argued that what elevates GERD beyond infrastructure is how it was built. After international lenders declined to finance the project, Ethiopia turned inward, mobilizing domestic banks and ordinary citizens through bonds and public contributions to construct Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.
PM Mottley said she told Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that GERD represents “the 21st century Adwa”,

#Op_ed: Rebuilding #Tigray’s Health System: Prioritizing human rights and dignity
In this op-ed for GEM Tigray, Batseba Seifu highlights that five years of genocidal war have devastated Tigray’s health system, erasing decades of progress in maternal care, vaccinations, chronic disease management, and emergency services.
The article explains that before the war, a network of health posts, centers, and hospitals—supported by ambulances—served millions. Today, most facilities are looted, damaged, or non-functional, and ambulance services have largely ceased. The author notes, “Deliberate and widespread attacks on healthcare” have left communities without essential services, causing preventable deaths among pregnant women, children, and patients with chronic illnesses.
The op-ed urges coordinated action to restore services and rebuild infrastructure, emphasizing that “rebuilding health care in Tigray is not charity—it is justice.”

News: #Ethiopia lost an estimated $24.6 billion to trade misinvoicing over a decade, new report reveals
Ethiopia lost an estimated #USD 24.6 billion through trade-related illicit financial flows (#IFFs) between 2013 and 2022, placing it among the top ten #African countries affected by trade misinvoicing, according to a new report by Global Financial Integrity (#GFI) released on 28 January 2026.

These gaps serve as a conservative proxy for illicit financial flows driven largely by under- and over-invoicing of trade transactions.

#AS_Editorial - From Hope to Retrenchment: #Ethiopia’s broken promise on press freedom needs urgent reversal
In May 2019, addressing an international audience at #UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day in Addis Abeba, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a decisive break with Ethiopia’s repressive past.
“A democratic Ethiopia cannot be materialized if individuals are imprisoned for generating and sharing their ideas responsibly,” he said, presenting his government as a reformist force committed to “decriminalizing freedom of expression and freedom of the press.” Ethiopia, he insisted, was entering “a new horizon of hope.”
Nearly seven years later, that horizon has receded. As Ethiopia moves toward the 2026 national elections, the distance between the Prime Minister’s 2019 commitments and today’s media reality has become impossible to ignore.
Legal ambiguity, bureaucratic coercion, and administrative punishment now define an environment that increasingly....

Ethiopia has formally submitted a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (#AFCON), seeking to stage the continental tournament for a fourth time and for the first time in more than five decades, according to a report by state-owned media citing the Ethiopian Football Federation (#EFF).
The report said the bid was officially lodged with the Confederation of African Football (#CAF), marking Ethiopia’s return to contention for hosting the tournament it last staged in 1976. Ethiopia previously hosted AFCON in 1962, 1968, and 1976, and won the title on home soil in 1962.
