News: Senior #US. officials, CRS visit emergency aid operations in #Tigray amid worsening humanitarian crisis

Senior officials and experts from the U.S. government and Catholic Relief Services (#CRS) conducted an observation visit to emergency food assistance operations in Tigray as humanitarian conditions in the region continue to deteriorate amid funding cuts and rising malnutrition.

The delegation, led by Dr. Carlos Juanju, Head of the U.S. Office of Humanitarian Assistance, visited #Wukro and #Hawzen towns on 27 January 2026. According to local media, the team observed emergency food distribution systems implemented by the Relief Society of Tigray (#REST) and held discussions with aid beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries told local broadcasters that while the assistance has been critical to their survival, significant gaps remain in both the quantity and diversity of food aid. Internally....

News: Flight suspensions linked to clashes between federal, Tigrayan forces in #Tigray: AFP

Clashes between federal and Tigrayan forces have erupted in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, prompting the suspension of flights, security and diplomatic sources told AFP on Thursday.

The renewed tensions risk a return to conflict in the volatile region, which three years ago emerged from a brutal war between Ethiopian forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (#TPLF) that the African Union says killed at least 600,000 people.

Hostilities broke out in recent days in #Tsemlet, #western_Tigray, an area claimed by forces from the neighbouring Amhara region who have refused to withdraw despite a peace agreement signed in Pretoria at the end of 2022 requiring them to do so.

"The situation appears to be deteriorating," the security source said. A diplomatic source seeking anonymity told AFP...

News: Conflict, flooding, fuel shortages strained humanitarian logistics in #Ethiopia in late 2025, report says

Ethiopia’s humanitarian logistics network faced mounting pressure in the final quarter of 2025 as #conflict, #climate_shocks, and #disease outbreaks continued to drive displacement and restrict aid delivery across several regions, according to a new Logistics Cluster fact sheet.

The report says sustained insecurity and infrastructure damage in the #Amhara, #Oromia, #Somali, and #Tigray regions compounded operational challenges for humanitarian partners, who relied heavily on coordinated logistics support to deliver life-saving assistance to hard-to-reach communities.

During the October–December period, access along key transport corridors remained fragile, with repeated security incidents delaying convoy movements and disrupting cargo delivery. Seasonal flooding further worsened the situation by damaging roads and bridges, cutting off critical....

#Ethiopia | ‘The 21st Century #Adwa’: Barbados’ PM Mia Mottley on GERD and African Agency

In a one-on-one interview with a comedian and TV host Trevor Noah last week, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley offered a passionate endorsement of Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing the project as “revolutionary” and placing it within Africa’s enduring energy crisis. Noting that Ethiopia’s population exceeds 100 million while just over half have access to electricity, Mottley framed GERD as a strategic response to a continent-wide development constraint.

She argued that what elevates GERD beyond infrastructure is how it was built. After international lenders declined to finance the project, Ethiopia turned inward, mobilizing domestic banks and ordinary citizens through bonds and public contributions to construct Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.

PM Mottley said she told Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that GERD represents “the 21st century Adwa”,

#Op_ed: Rebuilding #Tigray’s Health System: Prioritizing human rights and dignity

In this op-ed for GEM Tigray, Batseba Seifu highlights that five years of genocidal war have devastated Tigray’s health system, erasing decades of progress in maternal care, vaccinations, chronic disease management, and emergency services.

The article explains that before the war, a network of health posts, centers, and hospitals—supported by ambulances—served millions. Today, most facilities are looted, damaged, or non-functional, and ambulance services have largely ceased. The author notes, “Deliberate and widespread attacks on healthcare” have left communities without essential services, causing preventable deaths among pregnant women, children, and patients with chronic illnesses.

The op-ed urges coordinated action to restore services and rebuild infrastructure, emphasizing that “rebuilding health care in Tigray is not charity—it is justice.”

News: #Ethiopia says official creditors decline Eurobond restructuring terms, plans to reengage Ad Hoc Committee

The Ministry of Finance said Ethiopia will not proceed with the implementation of recently agreed #Eurobond restructuring terms after the country’s Official Creditor Committee (#OCC) concluded that the deal does not fully comply with the principle of Comparability of Treatment.

In a statement issued on 30 January, the ministry said the assessment followed consultations with the OCC and the International Monetary Fund (#IMF) after Ethiopia reached an agreement in principle (#AIP) on 2 January 2026 with a group of bondholders on restructuring its US$1 billion 6.625% Notes due 2024.

According to the ministry, Ethiopia and its advisers engaged the OCC and the IMF to determine whether the AIP was consistent with “(i) the Comparability of Treatment principle as applied by the OCC and (ii) the targets and parameters of Ethiopia’s IMF program.”......

News: #Ethiopia lost an estimated $24.6 billion to trade misinvoicing over a decade, new report reveals

Ethiopia lost an estimated #USD 24.6 billion through trade-related illicit financial flows (#IFFs) between 2013 and 2022, placing it among the top ten #African countries affected by trade misinvoicing, according to a new report by Global Financial Integrity (#GFI) released on 28 January 2026.

The report, Trade-Related Illicit Financial Flows in Africa, 2013–2022, analyzes discrepancies between what African countries report as exports and imports and what their trading partners report, so-called “mirror trade” gaps, using #UN Comtrade data. These gaps serve as a conservative proxy for illicit financial flows driven largely by under- and over-invoicing of trade transactions.

According to GFI, Ethiopia’s cumulative trade value gap of USD 24.6 billion over the ten-year period reflects persistent weaknesses in customs valuation, trade monitoring, and ....

#AS_Editorial - From Hope to Retrenchment: #Ethiopia’s broken promise on press freedom needs urgent reversal

In May 2019, addressing an international audience at #UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day in Addis Abeba, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a decisive break with Ethiopia’s repressive past.

“A democratic Ethiopia cannot be materialized if individuals are imprisoned for generating and sharing their ideas responsibly,” he said, presenting his government as a reformist force committed to “decriminalizing freedom of expression and freedom of the press.” Ethiopia, he insisted, was entering “a new horizon of hope.”

Nearly seven years later, that horizon has receded. As Ethiopia moves toward the 2026 national elections, the distance between the Prime Minister’s 2019 commitments and today’s media reality has become impossible to ignore.

Legal ambiguity, bureaucratic coercion, and administrative punishment now define an environment that increasingly....

A #Sudanese doctor recounts his harrowing escape from a #Darfur city under rebel bombardment

Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim dashed from building to building, desperate for places to hide. He ran through streets littered with bodies. Around him, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur province lay enveloped in smoke and fire.

Explosions, shelling and gunfire thundered from every direction.

After 18 months of battling, paramilitary fighters had overrun el-Fasher, the Sudanese army’s only remaining stronghold in the Darfur region. Ibrahim, who fled the city’s last functioning hospital with a colleague, said he feared he would not live to see the sun go down.

“All around we saw people running and falling to the ground in front of us,” the 28-year-old physician told The Associated Press, recounting the assault that began Oct. 26 and lasted three days. “We moved from house to house, from wall to wall under non-stop bombardment.....
