Seized Aid back in WFP hands, #Somalia confirms

Somalia’s federal government said on Monday that commodities removed from a warehouse affected by port expansion activities in Mogadishu have been returned to the World Food Programme (#WFP), following recent reports that a storage facility at the Mogadishu Port was demolished and supplies seized.

“The commodities removed from the warehouse have been fully returned to the World Food Programme,” the government said in a statement, adding that it “takes full responsibility for this unfortunate situation and regrets that it occurred.”

The government's action prompted the U.S. State Department to suspend humanitarian assistance to the federal government, accusing local officials of destroying a U.S.-funded warehouse and “illegally seizing” 76 metric tonnes of food aid intended for vulnerable populations.

To ensure the continued, secure and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian....

#Op_ed: Diversification Over Dependency: Why #Ethiopia should fast-track #Berbera amid #Djibouti’s ban on multimodal operators

In this op-ed, Adam Daud Ahmed argues that Ethiopia faces a logistics “moment of truth” as Djibouti’s ban on newly licensed Ethiopian Multimodal Transport Operators exposes “a dangerous structural weakness” in the country’s trade system.

“What began as a technical dispute over regulatory classifications has rapidly evolved into a strategic economic challenge,” he notes, highlighting the risks of relying on a single maritime gateway. Ahmed calls the situation a “diplomatic impasse,” leaving reforms subject to foreign discretion.

Ahmed presents the Port of Berbera—modernized under DP World—as a “credible alternative” and emphasizes that diversification is not abandonment but a way to “reclaim negotiating leverage through structural pragmatism.”

Uganda has announced plans to withdraw its troops from Somalia after nearly two decades of continuous peacekeeping operations, a move that could have significant implications for regional security and the fight against the militant group #Al_Shabab.

“After 19 years in Somalia, we intend to completely withdraw from that country very soon,” Muhoozi said, without providing further details or a timetable.

#Op_ed: From Binary Politics to Creative Compromise: Why #Ethiopia needs political imagination to bypass gridlock

In this op-ed, Donek Zemo highlights the story of the 17 camels from William Ury’s Getting to Yes with Yourself, noting its enduring lesson: “Disputes that seem impossible can often be resolved not by forcing outcomes, but by introducing a creative compromise that allows everyone to move forward.”

She contends that Ethiopia's political discourse remains confined within rigid binaries—unitary state versus ethnic federalism, old regional maps versus newly drawn ones—with political actors entrenched in positional demands rather than pursuing shared interests. This inflexibility, according to the author, skips essential stages of negotiation and compromise, hastening the descent of disputes into violence.

Donek emphasizes the broader implication: “Conflict resolution does not require choosing between old models; it requires designing new ones.”

#Afar: Delivering lifesaving nutrition across one of #Ethiopia’s harshest landscapes

Once you leave the city of #Semera behind, the Ethiopian landscape quickly opens into vast stretches of dry earth that seem to run endlessly toward the horizon.

Sparse green bushes dot the dusty ground, framed by distant mountains and volcanoes that define the Afari landscape. As our vehicles drive toward the town of Magenta to deliver nutrition to children through Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (#MSF) outreach activities, a river runs alongside the road. One of the main challenges faced by local communities is right in front of our eyes: water.

Afar, crossed by the Danakil Depression marking the northern end of the East African Rift Valley, is considered one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth.

Water availability and quality in the region are strongly influenced by its.....

News: Salsay Weyane raises concerns over election conditions as #NEBE presses Interim Administration on preparations

Salsay Weyane #Tigray (#SAWT) has raised concerns over the feasibility of holding elections in Tigray under current conditions, warning that key prerequisites for a credible electoral process remain unmet, even as the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) continues to push ahead with preparations for the seventh national general election scheduled for June 2026.

In a press release issued on yesterday, the party said the security situation in Tigray remains unconducive to free and fair elections, citing the absence of a fully functional civil administration capable of facilitating the electoral process.

SAWT also said that significant parts of the region remain under the control of what it described as illegal authorities, while millions of people displaced from ....

#Policy_Brief: #Ethiopia’s Digital Leap Paradox: Rapid progress, fragile foundations

As Ethiopia advances Digital Ethiopia 2030, Abebe Diro argues that rapid digitization masks a deeper fragility: it is outpacing institutional capacity, infrastructure, and public trust—what he calls the “Ethiopian paradox.”

Abebe notes that “a digital state is not an app or a strategy document,” but “a web of trust, legitimacy, accountability, and reliable infrastructure.”

The author underscores that sustainable success depends on “sequencing, not speed,” cautioning that without this approach, the outcome will be “more platforms but less legitimacy,” transforming digital ambition into fragility.
