The Saudi-backed Yemeni government accused the United Arab Emirates on Monday of running a secret prison at an airbase near the south Yemeni port city of Mukalla, an allegation denied by Abu Dhabi.

The allegations were made by Salem Al-Khanbashi, the governor of the eastern Yemeni province of Hadramout, during a rare media trip arranged by the Saudi government which flew international journalists including a Reuters team from Riyadh to the Riyan airbase near the Yemeni city of Mukalla.

News: #Egypt shifts narrative on GERD, demands compensation from #Ethiopia
Egypt has shifted its public stance on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD), with the country’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, demanding that the dam pay compensation for the damage it has caused to Egypt and #Sudan.
Speaking during a plenary session of the Egyptian Senate on Sunday, Minister Sweilem said that no dam of GERD’s scale has ever been constructed on the Nile River through unilateral action. He claimed the dam has already reduced Egypt’s share of Nile water by 38 billion cubic meters from its allocated 55 billion cubic meters.
Ethiopia, which built the GERD on the Blue Nile in line with its sovereign rights, has consistently emphasized that the dam is designed to regulate seasonal floods and generate hydropower, not to reduce downstream water allocations.

#Book_Review: A Ten Minute Mission: The Least Price for Freedom by W. Hundee Hurrisoo
In this book review, Ababiyaa Ahmed Ajmel examines W. Hundee Hurrisoo’s A Ten Minute Mission: The Least Price for Freedom, calling it more than a prison memoir—it exposes the “moral and political logic” behind the #Derg regime’s terror.
As editor of Bariisaa, #Ethiopia’s first #Oromo-language newspaper, Hundee saw his symbol of “freedom’s light” targeted for erasure. Arrested under the false pretense of a “ten-minute mission,” he endured “4,040 days” in prisons like the Grand Palace and Maikalawi, where torture tools such as the “Stalin stick” broke bodies.
The reviewer emphasizes that “the memoir is not only a record of erasure” but also affirms the Oromo concept of Jirra: “we are here, we exist”—a truth echoed by today’s #Qeerroo generation.

Tigray political actors have raised concerns over the remarks and actions of the United States Ambassador to Ethiopia following his recent visit to #Western_Tigray, warning that public messaging and engagement perceived as unbalanced could undermine trust at a sensitive stage in the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.

#Ethiopia’s National Election Board (NEBE) has confirmed that the seventh general election will be held in the Tigray region, announcing a nationwide budget of 10 billion birr and the completion of key preparatory work.
The announcement comes despite persistent objections from Tigray-based political parties, who say the absence of security, administrative capacity, and ongoing displacement of civilians make a credible election impossible.
Responding to lawmakers on 13 January 2026, NEBE Deputy Chair Tesfaye Niway confirmed that elections will proceed in Tigray, noting that discussions are underway with the Tigray Interim Administration and local political parties to facilitate the process, according to the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

The family of Brigadier General #Guesh Gebre, former commander of #Army 15 of the Tigrayan forces, has demanded that authorities disclose his place of detention and allow him access to legal counsel and family members, saying he has been denied his constitutional rights since his arrest.
The demand follows the Tigray Bureau of #Peace and #Security’s announcement of the arrest of the senior commander, which it said was part of efforts to enforce discipline, accountability, and the rule of law within the Tigrayan forces.
In a statement issued 17 January 2026, the bureau said no individual is above the law and that internal reforms are under way to safeguard the army’s unity and operational readiness.

#ICC finds evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in #Sudan’s El Fasher
The International Criminal Court (ICC)’s assessment of the situation in Sudan shows evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
The report covering the period between July and December last year says that the same crimes were also committed in October last year, when the city was under siege.
“Following the takeover of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on and around October 26 and 27, 2025, the Office has received and analysed numerous reports of allegations of the commission of systematic and widespread crimes. These reports have included the submission to the Office of a number of graphic videos and images depicting a similar pattern of crimes previously seen being allegedly committed by the RSF in other areas of Darfur, including detention, mistreatment, and killings of persons from non-Arab tribes,” the report that was tabled before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday states.
It adds that further analysis indicates acts of celebrating direct executions of persons of non-Arab ethnicity and the desecration of their bodies afterwards.
“In addition, information reviewed, as provided by partner organisations and open-source collections, corroborates this reality. This includes satellite imagery indicating mass killing events and attempts to conceal crimes through the establishment of mass graves,” says the document.
While briefing the UNSC on the ICC’s activities related to the situation in Darfur, ICC’s Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan said the atrocities are used as a deliberate tool to assert control over the civilian population.

#Op_ed: Map Catches Up to Reality: Why #Israel chose #Somaliland’s sovereignty over #Somalia’s dependency
In his op-ed, Hamse A. Khaire argues Israel’s recognition of Somaliland marks a shift from diplomatic convention to geopolitical realism, exposing the paradox: “Somalia enjoys recognition without sovereignty, while Somaliland exercises sovereignty without recognition.”
He explains that while Somalia has become a #Turkish client state, where sovereignty is hollow “when a foreign power controls your air and sea gateways,” Somaliland has governed independently since 1991, maintaining security, institutions, and elections.
Khaire emphasizes that Somaliland represents everything Somalia is not: “functioning institutions, genuine security, and independence from Turkish tutelage.”
