#Boeing settles lawsuit by #Canadian man who lost family in 2019 #Ethiopia plane crash

Boeing reached a last-minute settlement with a Canadian who lost multiple relatives in a 737 MAX crash in 2019, averting a trial, the plaintiff's attorney announced on Wednesday.

A Chicago federal court was expected to hear opening arguments Wednesday after a jury was selected this week. But the two sides reached a deal Tuesday night on the civil case, said Clifford Law Offices.

Financial terms were not disclosed in the agreement, which Clifford's press release called an "11th hour" accord.

The case was brought by Manant Vaidya, whose sister Kosha and parents Pannagesh and Hansini Vaidya, perished in the March 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed 157 in all.

Vaidya also lost his brother-in-law and two young nieces. Relatives of these victims sued Boeing separately in a case that was settled out of court in July 2025.

#Egypt shared intelligence with #Saudi_Arabia on #UAE activities in #Yemen, sources say

Exclusive: Cairo sent Riyadh recordings of Emirati officials 'discussing their objectives in Yemen and coordination with leaders of the STC', says presidency official.

Egypt passed intelligence on recent Emirati operations in Yemen to Saudi authorities as part of efforts to rebuild strained relations with Riyadh, a senior Egyptian presidential source told Middle East Eye.

The move came amid rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with Egyptian officials viewing Emirati backing of armed and separatist groups in Yemen, Sudan and Somaliland as a growing threat to Egypt’s national security.

“Egypt offered the UAE as a sacrifice to restore Saudi support and preserve national security,” the source said, describing the step as a “carefully planned manoeuvre”.

#Ethiopian Federal Police allege #Eritrean link in ammunition seizure amid tensions

Ethiopian Federal Police says it has seized nearly 57,000 rounds of ammunition in Woldia town, Amhara region, alleging that the consignment originated from Eritrea and was intended for armed groups operating inside Ethiopia, amid tensions between the two countries.

In a statement issued on 14 January 2026, the Federal Police said they, in coordination with other security bodies, intercepted an Isuzu freight truck at a checkpoint in Woldia and detained two suspects. The vehicle was allegedly traveling from Mekelle, in the Tigray region, toward Shewa Robit.

According to the statement, a preliminary investigation indicated that the ammunition had been secretly transported from Eritrea, received in Mekelle, and was intended for delivery to the Fano armed group operating in the Amhara region. The police further accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of facilitating the transfer.

#Op_ed: Lingering Scourge of War: Unexploded ordnance, landmines continue endangering women and girls in #Tigray

Almost four years after the conclusion of the Tigray war in #Ethiopia, civilians continue to face lethal risks from anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). This op-ed, written on behalf of GEM Tigray, emphasizes that these remnants of conflict have become “a critical and persistent threat to the civilian population, with children, women, and girls bearing a disproportionate share of the suffering.”

The article highlights that mines and UXO are dispersed across homes, schools, farmlands, and public spaces, resulting in fatalities, catastrophic injuries, and long-term disabilities, while severely disrupting livelihoods, food security, and access to education.

It further underscores that “addressing explosive contamination—with a clear gender lens—is not optional; it is essential.”

Ethiopia is expected to remain among the five countries with the largest populations in need of urgent humanitarian food assistance by mid-2026, even as overall food assistance needs show a projected decline compared to last year, according to the latest outlook by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) released this month.

FEWS NET projects that between 15.0 and 15.9 million people in Ethiopia, equivalent to 10–15 percent of the national population, will face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or Emergency (IPC Phase 4) levels of acute food insecurity in July 2026.

Ethiopia is expected to account for more than 10 percent of total global food assistance needs across FEWS NET-monitored countries, alongside Sudan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Yemen.

Mekelle — Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Wednesday that Cairo is prepared to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, as the conflict in the neighboring country surpasses 1,000 days, according to AFP.

Speaking at a press conference alongside the #UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, Abdelatty said Egypt “will not stand idly by” in the face of threats to Sudan’s national institutions or unity.

“These are red lines,” Abdelatty said, adding that “a violation of Sudan’s national security is a violation of Egypt’s national security.”

Delays plague voting in #Uganda’s presidential election

Uganda’s presidential election was plagued by widespread delays Thursday in addition to a days-long internet shutdown that has been criticized as an anti-democratic tactic in a country where the president has held office since 1986.

Some polling stations remained closed for up to four hours after the scheduled 7 a.m. start time due to “technical challenges,” according to the nation’s electoral commission, which asked polling officers to use paper registration records to ensure the difficulties did not “disenfranchise any voter.”

President Yoweri Museveni, 81, faces seven other candidates, including Robert Kyagulanyi, a musician-turned-politician best known as Bobi Wine, who is calling for political change.

The East African country of roughly 45 million people has 21.6 million registered voters. Polls were expected to close at...
