News: #Salsay_Weyane rejects claims of #Tigray’s participation in national dialogue as seven parties insist consultations must proceed

Salsay Weyane Tigray (#SAWET) has rejected what it described as “deceptive” claims that Tigray is participating in #Ethiopia’s national dialogue process, arguing that the region lacks constitutional representation, remains partially occupied, and continues to face unresolved political and humanitarian challenges.

The position contrasts with that of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (#ENDC) and seven Tigrayan political parties, which maintain that consultations are necessary and should not be delayed.

In a statement issued on Monday, SAWET said federal government assertions that Tigray is taking part in the national dialogue disregard the region’s “actual situation” and seek to obscure what it called fundamental & unresolved questions.

The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, however, said it remains committed ...

#Sudan police unveil Khartoum security plan as government returns

Sudan’s police on Tuesday outlined a sweeping security plan to protect the seven localities of #Khartoum state, hours before the cabinet and most federal ministries complete their relocation from the wartime seat of Port Sudan.

Brigadier-General Fath al-Rahman Mohamed al-Tom told Sudan Tribune the force will deploy additional officers, reactivate criminal-investigation units and relaunch the “999” emergency call centre to handle civilian complaints.

“Public facilities, bridges and river crossings are priority targets for protection,” al-Tom said, adding that patrols, fixed checkpoints and daily raids had already “dismantled a major cell in East Nile” and delivered “a measurable drop in crime”.

He said the police command had introduced “modern technology” to monitor deployments and pledged “immediate disciplinary action” against any officer found in violation of regulations....

#Uganda cuts internet days before presidential election

Ugandan authorities have imposed a nationwide internet blackout days before presidential elections in which President Yoweri #Museveni is expected to prolong his 40-year rule.

A government regulatory body instructed mobile network operators to block public internet access starting at 6pm (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Internet monitor NetBlocks later confirmed a “nation-scale disruption to internet connectivity”.

The network outage has heightened concerns about repression in the run-up to the January 15 vote, in which 81-year-old Museveni, Africa’s third-longest-serving leader, is being challenged by pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine.

Musevni’s re-election ‘all but locked down’

Ugandan security personnel have rounded up hundreds of opposition supporters in advance of the vote and repeatedly fired live bullets and tear gas at pro-Wine campaign rallies. ...

#Commentary: Politics of Performance: #Ethiopia’s education crisis, PM Abiy’s ‘intellectual’ puzzle

In this commentary, Seife Tadelle analyzes Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s lecture delivered on 02 January 2026 to mark the 75th anniversary of Addis Ababa University (#AAU). While acknowledging its “ambitious scope and engaging tone,” he argues that “Who Is an Intellectual?” exposed “a notable methodological limitation.”

Seife notes, “Over the hour-long presentation, no sources, theoretical frameworks, or empirical references were cited,” a gap that weakens its academic credibility, “particularly within a university setting where scholarly rigor is foundational.”

More troubling, the author contends, was the marginalization of Ethiopia’s own intellectual heritage. “The omission of figures such as Zera Yacob, Gebrehiwot Baykedagn, Saint Yared, and Kebede Mikael risks erasing historical continuity,” thereby weakening the cumulative nature of scholarship.

News: #Cairo expands military presence in #Somalia over fears breakaway Somaliland could enable #Israeli-#Ethiopian axis – The national

#Egypt has broadened its military mission in Somalia, prioritizing the protection of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government amid concerns that the breakaway region of #Somaliland could facilitate an Israeli-Ethiopian axis in the Horn of Africa, Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National, citing its sources, reported.

The report said Cairo’s expansion reflects fears that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland last month may give it a strategic foothold, potentially allowing coordination with Ethiopia, with which Egypt has long-standing disputes over #Nile waters.

While some analysts downplay the risk of escalation, sources told The National that Egypt views Israeli and Ethiopian engagement in the Horn of Africa as a serious national security threat, particularly regarding the Nile and strategic maritime routes.

The United States House of Representatives has approved a three-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (#AGOA), keeping the program in place until 31 December 2028, though Ethiopia’s potential participation remains uncertain.

The extension, enacted through H.R. 6500, the AGOA Extension Act, aims to provide stability for U.S. companies sourcing products from sub-Saharan #Africa and gives Congress time to consider long-term reforms for the trade program.

According to the statement, AGOA has the most stringent eligibility criteria of any preference program, requiring annual reviews to ensure countries meet standards related to rule of law, political pluralism, anti-corruption, intellectual property, human rights, and market access, while also safeguarding U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s bid to rejoin AGOA...

#Boeing settles lawsuit by #Canadian man who lost family in 2019 #Ethiopia plane crash

Boeing reached a last-minute settlement with a Canadian who lost multiple relatives in a 737 MAX crash in 2019, averting a trial, the plaintiff's attorney announced on Wednesday.

A Chicago federal court was expected to hear opening arguments Wednesday after a jury was selected this week. But the two sides reached a deal Tuesday night on the civil case, said Clifford Law Offices.

Financial terms were not disclosed in the agreement, which Clifford's press release called an "11th hour" accord.

The case was brought by Manant Vaidya, whose sister Kosha and parents Pannagesh and Hansini Vaidya, perished in the March 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed 157 in all.

Vaidya also lost his brother-in-law and two young nieces. Relatives of these victims sued Boeing separately in a case that was settled out of court in July 2025.

#Egypt shared intelligence with #Saudi_Arabia on #UAE activities in #Yemen, sources say

Exclusive: Cairo sent Riyadh recordings of Emirati officials 'discussing their objectives in Yemen and coordination with leaders of the STC', says presidency official.

Egypt passed intelligence on recent Emirati operations in Yemen to Saudi authorities as part of efforts to rebuild strained relations with Riyadh, a senior Egyptian presidential source told Middle East Eye.

The move came amid rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with Egyptian officials viewing Emirati backing of armed and separatist groups in Yemen, Sudan and Somaliland as a growing threat to Egypt’s national security.

“Egypt offered the UAE as a sacrifice to restore Saudi support and preserve national security,” the source said, describing the step as a “carefully planned manoeuvre”.

#Op_ed: Lingering Scourge of War: Unexploded ordnance, landmines continue endangering women and girls in #Tigray

Almost four years after the conclusion of the Tigray war in #Ethiopia, civilians continue to face lethal risks from anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). This op-ed, written on behalf of GEM Tigray, emphasizes that these remnants of conflict have become “a critical and persistent threat to the civilian population, with children, women, and girls bearing a disproportionate share of the suffering.”

The article highlights that mines and UXO are dispersed across homes, schools, farmlands, and public spaces, resulting in fatalities, catastrophic injuries, and long-term disabilities, while severely disrupting livelihoods, food security, and access to education.

It further underscores that “addressing explosive contamination—with a clear gender lens—is not optional; it is essential.”
