Addis Abeba — His Holiness Abune Matthias I, Patriarch of the Ethiopian #Orthodox Tewahedo Church, has warned that Christianity is increasingly being marginalized in today’s world, citing reports of persecution, killings, and kidnappings of Christians across the globe.

In his Christmas and New Year message delivered on the eve of the holiday, the Patriarch acknowledged the advances of modern civilization, including technological progress and material convenience, but noted that it has also created an environment hostile to Christianity. “Although a large number of people in the world follow Christianity, we are seeing this Christianity being pushed aside by various elements in our time,” he said.

Abune Matthias expressed deep concern over...

30 #Yemeni fishermen released after days of detention by #Eritrean authorities in the Red Sea

Thirty Yemeni fishermen have returned home after being released by Eritrean authorities following several days of forced detention in the #Red_Sea, in an incident that highlights ongoing violations against workers in this vital sector.

According to statements from the freed fishermen, two Eritrean navy gunboats intercepted them while they were fishing inside Yemeni territorial waters near the international shipping lane.

The fishermen said they were taken at gunpoint to an Eritrean island, where they were subjected to questioning without any legal justification, before being allowed to return aboard only one of their vessels.

The fishermen further confirmed that Eritrean forces confiscated their second boat along with fishing equipment, catches of fish, and personal belongings.

They stressed that such systematic practices ...

News: Nine journalists killed in #Africa in 2025 as #Eritrea remains continent’s biggest jailer – IFJ

Africa recorded at least nine journalist killings in 2025, as 27 journalists remain jailed across the continent — three in #Ethiopia and seven in Eritrea, which remains the continent’s biggest jailer — according to the International Federation of Journalists’ (#IFJ) final Killed List released on 31 December.

The report places Africa among regions where journalists continue to face lethal risks and systematic repression, despite global attention to press freedom. Overall, the IFJ documented 128 journalists and media workers killed worldwide in 2025, including 10 women, marking another deadly year for the profession and highlighting what it called the “persistent failure” of authorities to protect media workers.

In Africa, #Sudan accounted for six of the nine killings ...

#Khartoum airport cleared of wrecked aircraft, but reopening still uncertain

Khartoum International Airport has been cleared of war-damaged aircraft and debris, aviation sources said on Thursday, yet no date has been set for the resumption of commercial flights after nearly three years of closure.

The airport, a repeated target of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since fighting erupted in April 2023, saw its runways and apron littered with destroyed planes and shrapnel. Carriers, working with airport authorities, have now removed the last wreckage in line with international safety protocols, the sources told Sudan Tribune.

A full technical inspection and rehabilitation of the facility are still required, and the Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority has yet to issue a Notice to Air Missions (#NOTAM) reopening the airspace. Officials say such a notice must be agreed upon by security and civilian agencies.

Some aviation managers hope flights could restart as ...

#Ethiopia: Court denies bail for former state Minister #Taye Dendea, orders Prosecutor to amend charges related to alleged support for armed groups

Addis Abeba — The Federal High Court on 1 January 2026 denied bail to former state minister Taye Dendea and ordered federal prosecutors to clarify and refine charges accusing him of supporting armed groups and attempting to dismantle the constitutional order, his defence lawyer said.

The ruling followed the court’s review of Taye’s bail request alongside additional charges filed by the Prosecutor on 24 November 2025. In denying bail, the presiding judge cited concerns that Taye could commit further alleged offenses if released, according to his lawyer, Aberra Nigus.

During the hearing, the court examined charges under Articles 257(A) and (G) of the Criminal Code. The charges allege that Taye disseminated propaganda in support of armed ....

How the climate crisis is changing an ancient way of life in #Ethiopia

Driving through the desert-like landscapes of the #Afar, northern Ethiopia, traditional Afari tukuls – oval-shaped, flexible shelters made out of twigs and covered with mats or animal skins – are regularly seen scattered along the roadside.

These tent-like structures are specifically designed for their mobility, and they speak to how the livestock-raising community of Afar has traditionally trekked across the region, looking for pasture for their herds of camels and sheep, transporting the materials they need for their homes as they go.

Afar is considered the cradle of humanity, given that it is where the “mother of humanity”, known as “#Lucy”, was discovered in 1974, and some of the oldest known stone tools have been discovered in the region.

When Lucy walked the valleys of Afar three million years ago, the landscapes were lush green ...

In East Africa, reform efforts are showing results, with #Uganda, #Rwanda, and #Ethiopia projected to average around seven percent growth, underscoring the region’s relative resilience.

However, africanews reports that the upbeat outlook is tempered by mounting vulnerabilities. Chief among them ...
