News: #Ezema accuses ruling party of coercing civil servants into membership

Addis Abeba – The #Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party (Ezema) has accused the ruling #Prosperity_Party of pressuring government employees to join the party against their will.

In a statement released on 28 October, Ezema said government officials are being compelled through various forms of influence to become party members, a practice the opposition party says violates the constitution and undermines democratic principles. The party added that officials face the risk of losing promotions or being sidelined in their work if they refuse to comply.

Ezema noted that the practice has persisted since the early years following the 2013 elections, with party structures reportedly using government resources to organize internal meetings and other activities.

#Sudan: Mass killings reported in Sudanese city seized by paramilitary group

Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) accused of killing more than 2,000 unarmed civilians in #El_Fasher in recent days.

Reports of ethnically motivated mass killings and other atrocities are emerging from El Fasher after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces took control of the city in Sudan’s western Darfur region over the weekend.

Video released by local activists showed a fighter known for executing civilians in RSF-controlled areas shooting a group of unarmed civilians sitting on the ground at point-blank range.

Different footage shared by pro-democracy activists purportedly showed dozens of people lying dead on the ground alongside burnt-out vehicles. The footage has not been verified.

#Ethiopia’s Inflation Cooldown: Progress achieved, challenges persist

In Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Ethiopia’s general inflation fell to 11.7% in October 2025, down from 16.1% last year. Food inflation also dropped sharply to 10.2%, from 19.2%. However, non-food inflation rose to 14.2%, higher than 11.6% in October 2024.

Abiy called the overall decline “a remarkable achievement” and “the lowest inflation rate” since 2018, pledging to push inflation into single digits this fiscal year.

Yet, a recent commentary published by Addis Standard cautions that “inflation has remained stubbornly high for an extended period, eroding the purchasing power of consumers and undermining economic confidence.” According to the article, cumulative price increases reached 212.65% between 2020/21 and 2024/25, meaning an item costing 100 birr in 2020/21 now costs about 312.65 birr.

#Opinion: Aesthetics of Outrage: Why beauty dictates our empathy for victims of sexual violence

In this opinion piece, Eyob Yohannes asks whether our empathy is truly moral or just aesthetic, noting that compassion often “behaves like taste.” He highlights how, amid widespread gender-based violence in #Ethiopia, public outrage fixates on victims who are “strikingly beautiful,” arguing that attention goes mostly to “those whose faces fit society’s aesthetic ideal.”

“We are moved not just by pain, but by how that pain looks,” Eyob writes. This “moral vanity” turns empathy into performance, where “beauty becomes the medium of morality,” letting us feel righteous without confronting injustice’s harsh reality.

True morality, the author contends, begins when empathy “no longer needs beauty to function”—when we honor dignity in every face, not just the photogenic ones. Until then, we remain “aesthetes of morality,” mourning selectively, not justly.

News: #Tigray interim admin warns against unilateral return of IDPs without #Pretoria framework

Tigray interim administration has urged the federal government to ensure the return of internally displaced persons (#IDPs) and the protection of Tigray’s territorial integrity strictly through the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.

In a statement the bureau of communication affairs of Tigray issued late Tuesday, the Bureau said the “return of IDPs and the security of Tigray’s territorial land will be achieved only through the Pretoria Agreement,” accusing the federal government of delaying the full execution of the deal signed three years ago to end the two-year devastating war.

The Bureau said any move by the federal government to “ignore the Pretoria Agreement and return IDPs on its own without the consent of the people, the Tigray Interim Administration, or the negotiating bodies is unacceptable.”

News: Only 12% of children in Ethiopia complete primary school, achieve minimum learning proficiency, new data reveal

A newly released Global Education Monitoring report and African Centre for School Leadership Spotlight Report titled Lead for Foundational Learning show that just 12 percent of children in Ethiopia complete primary education and achieve minimum learning proficiency.

The report, shared with Addis Standard by UNESCO, shows overall learning levels across Africa are also lower than previously thought.

The report comes on the heels of several factors that have further strained Ethiopia’s already fragile education system. Addis Standard’s recent reporting reveals that in regions such as Amhara, Oromia, and Tigray, schools are facing dire challenges stemming from the combined effects of wars, displacement, and resource shortages.

Beyond conflicts, persistent budget constraints, food insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure have deepened the crisis, ....

News: Amnesty International urges war crimes probe into US air strike that killed dozens of #Ethiopian migrants in #Yemen

#Amnesty International has called for an immediate and transparent investigation by the #United_States into a deadly air strike on a migrant detention center in Sa’ada, north-western Yemen, which killed and injured dozens of Ethiopian migrants in April 2025, describing the attack as a likely war crime.

The human rights organization said the strike, carried out by the US military as part of “Operation Rough Rider” on 28 April 2025, amounted to an indiscriminate attack that violated international humanitarian law.

“The harrowing testimonies from survivors paint a clear picture of a civilian building, packed with detainees, being bombed without distinction,” said Kristine Beckerle, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for the #Middle_East and #North_Africa.

#Tanzania blackout after election chaos, deaths feared

Tanzania was under a communications blackout on Thursday a day after elections turned into violent chaos with unconfirmed reports of many dead.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan had sought to solidify her position and silence criticism within her party in the virtually uncontested polls, with the main challengers either jailed or barred from standing. But Election Day descended into violence as hundreds took to the streets.

An AFP journalist saw a police station burned down in the economic hub Dar es Salaam and there were reports of polling stations attacked and protesters tearing down images of the president in several parts of the country.

A diplomatic source told AFP they had unconfirmed reports of 30 or more people killed.

But a full internet blackout remained in place on Thursday, along with limits on international calls,....

#Op_ed: Ashes or Hope: #Ethiopia’s choice between war and peace

“Ethiopia stands once more at a dangerous crossroads,” writes the author, who has witnessed the devastating effects of war firsthand. He notes that while “the memory of the recent war in #Tigray is raw,” in #Amhara and #Oromia, “conflicts are still raging.”

According to the author, deep political mistrust, exclusion, and a “winner-takes-all” culture fuel the crisis, while failed peace efforts—such as the Pretoria deal and stalled talks with the #OLA—leave communities exposed. Survivors endure “mass rape, forced pregnancy, and sexual torture,” and rising tensions over Ethiopia’s push for sea access risk sparking a conflict “far worse than anything before.”

Yet, the author contends that “hope remains,” urging the U.S. and global actors to back inclusive dialogue, credible mediation, and peace-linked aid. “Now is the time to embrace dialogue, forgiveness, and a shared future.”

Analysis: Industry insiders say #Ethiopia’s new power tariff a crucial test for its Crypto mining boom

Ethiopia’s newly announced electricity tariff for data mining firms is being viewed by industry insiders as a pivotal test for the country’s fast-growing crypto mining sector.

While state power producer Ethiopian Electric Power (#EEP) says the tariff overhaul is aimed at ensuring cost recovery & system reliability, operators warn it could redefine the economics of doing business in one of the world’s most energy-competitive mining markets.

EEP has announced a new electricity tariff structure for data mining customers, introducing a Time-of-Use (TOU) & Availability-Based Tariff (ABT) system effective 1 December 2025, according to an official letter seen by Addis Standard.

In the letter dated 27 October 2025, EEP said the revised tariff follows “a thorough assessment of generation, transmission, & operational costs” and aligns with the national cost recovery framework.

#UN Security Council #condemns assault by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on #Sudan’s El-Fasher

The members of the UN Security Council condemned on Thursday the assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El-Fasher in Sudan’s North Darfur and expressed “grave concern” over escalating violence, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the members of the Security Council “condemned reported atrocities being perpetrated by the RSF against the civilian population, including summary executions and arbitrary detentions, and expressed grave concern at the heightened risk of large-scale atrocities, including ethnically motivated atrocities.”

Recalling Resolution 2736 (2024), which demands that the RSF lift the siege of El-Fasher and calls for an immediate halt to the fighting and for de-escalation in and around El Fasher, the members “strongly” urged the RSF to implement the provisions of this resolution.

The members called for all perpetrators of violations to be held accountable.

Demanding that all parties to the conflict protect civilians and abide by their obligations under international law, the members called on them to respect and protect humanitarian personnel, their premises, and assets.

The members of the Security Council called on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to allow and facilitate safe and unhindered humanitarian access in a manner consistent with international law. They called for the protection of civilians and for safe passage for those trying to flee the city,” according to the statement.

They reiterated that the priority is for the parties to resume talks to reach a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive, and Sudanese-owned political process.

Urging all member states to refrain from external interference that seeks to foment conflict and instability, the council members unequivocally reaffirmed their “unwavering commitment” to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan.

“In this regard, the Security Council reaffirmed its rejection to the establishment of a parallel governing authority in areas controlled by the RSF,” they added.

The paramilitary RSF was engaged in heavy fighting with the army and seized El-Fasher on Sunday. The city had been under siege by the rebel group since May 2024. Several local and international reports indicate mass killings, systematic ethnic cleansing, and torture of civilians by the rebel group in the city.
