News: #TPLF accuses federal government of “political deception” over return of Western Tigray IDPs as officials hold talks in #Humera

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused the federal government of “political deception” and of failing to implement key provisions of the #Pretoria Agreement regarding the return of internally displaced persons (#IDPs) from #Western_Tigray.

The accusation came after federal and regional officials held discussions in Humera on plans to facilitate the return of displaced people “in a manner that promotes peace and public unity,” according to a 26 October 2025 report by local media.

Participants in the meeting reportedly included Mohammed Idris, Minister of Peace; Getachew Reda, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for East African Affairs and local officials.

On August 2025 Addis Standard reported that President Tadesse Werede has warned that attempts to facilitate the return of IDPs to Western Tigray without resolving....

#Kenya: #US and #China interest in Kenya’s $62 billion #rare earth site sparks local concern

African nations are increasingly at the centre of a new mineral Cold War. Kenya’s Mrima Hill, with rare earth deposits valued at over $62 billion, has become a key focus of US and China competition for critical minerals.

Kenya has become the latest focal point in the global contest for critical minerals, with Mrima Hill on the country’s southern coast identified as one of Africa’s richest sources of rare earth elements used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and advanced electronics.

The 157-hectare forest in Kwale County is estimated to contain mineral deposits worth more than US$62 billion, according to earlier studies by Cortec Mining Kenya, a subsidiary of UK- and Canada-based Pacific Wildcat Resources.

The site holds niobium and other valuable minerals used in steelmaking, aerospace engineering, and clean-tech production.

The discovery has drawn the attention of global powers seeking to diversify their critical mineral supply chains. In June, Marc Dillard, then interim U.S. ambassador to Kenya, visited Mrima Hill as part of Washington’s diplomatic effort to secure sustainable access to Africa’s rare earths.

South China Morning Post reported that Chinese nationals have also attempted to visit the area in recent months but were turned away by local guards.

Adding to the contest, an Australian consortium of mining firms, RareX and Iluka Resources, has announced plans to explore the site, while land speculators and investors are reportedly flocking to nearby coastal villages.

After fleeing violence, refugees in #Ethiopia struggle with hunger

Funding cuts are forcing #WFP to sharply shrink assistance to hundreds of thousands asylum seekers

Nyibol and her four children crossed from their native #South_Sudan into Ethiopia last April, feeling weak from hunger. It had been days since their last meal.

“My children are small; the journey was difficult for them,” recalls Nyibol, describing struggling with sickness during a two-week long journey. “They kept asking me ‘Mama, where are we going?’ I told them, ‘to a safe place,’” she adds. (As a refugee, Nyibol’s last name is being withheld for her protection).

While Nyibol’s family has escaped unrest in their homeland, they face new hardship in Ethiopia’s western #Gambella Region, where they found shelter. A severe funding shortfall is forcing the World Food Programme (WFP) and other humanitarian agencies to sharply shrink food and other assistance....

Salsay Weyane Tigray asserted that those currently in control of the area “are widely known for orchestrating the industrial-scale killing and displacement of millions of Tigrayans” and “stand implicated as perpetrators....

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed told members of the House of People’s Representatives on Tuesday that there is “no official record or institutional decision” documenting how Ethiopia lost access to the Red Sea, describing the matter as a “legal, historical, and existential question” that must be addressed through peaceful dialogue.

However, I do not believe that it would take another 30 years to restore what was lost.”

News: #Ethiopia slips further in Global Rule of Law ranking, WJP warns of accelerating authoritarian trends

Ethiopia’s rule of law continues its steady decline, ranking 132nd out of 143 countries in the 2025 World Justice Project (#WJP) Rule of Law Index, released today. The country’s score fell by 2.4% compared to last year, underscoring a five-year pattern of weakening institutions, shrinking civic space, and growing political interference.

According to the World Justice Project (WJP), the global rule of law recession has intensified in 2025, with 68% of countries, including Ethiopia, experiencing declines. “The expansion of authoritarian trends is the primary force behind this global deterioration,” the WJP said, noting that checks and balances have weakened and judicial independence has eroded worldwide.

Ethiopia now ranks 30th out of 34 countries in #Sub_Saharan Africa, while #Rwanda (39th globally), Namibia, and Mauritius remain the region’s top performers.

News: #Ezema accuses ruling party of coercing civil servants into membership

Addis Abeba – The #Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party (Ezema) has accused the ruling #Prosperity_Party of pressuring government employees to join the party against their will.

In a statement released on 28 October, Ezema said government officials are being compelled through various forms of influence to become party members, a practice the opposition party says violates the constitution and undermines democratic principles. The party added that officials face the risk of losing promotions or being sidelined in their work if they refuse to comply.

Ezema noted that the practice has persisted since the early years following the 2013 elections, with party structures reportedly using government resources to organize internal meetings and other activities.

#Sudan: Mass killings reported in Sudanese city seized by paramilitary group

Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) accused of killing more than 2,000 unarmed civilians in #El_Fasher in recent days.

Reports of ethnically motivated mass killings and other atrocities are emerging from El Fasher after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces took control of the city in Sudan’s western Darfur region over the weekend.

Video released by local activists showed a fighter known for executing civilians in RSF-controlled areas shooting a group of unarmed civilians sitting on the ground at point-blank range.

Different footage shared by pro-democracy activists purportedly showed dozens of people lying dead on the ground alongside burnt-out vehicles. The footage has not been verified.

#Ethiopia’s Inflation Cooldown: Progress achieved, challenges persist

In Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Ethiopia’s general inflation fell to 11.7% in October 2025, down from 16.1% last year. Food inflation also dropped sharply to 10.2%, from 19.2%. However, non-food inflation rose to 14.2%, higher than 11.6% in October 2024.

Abiy called the overall decline “a remarkable achievement” and “the lowest inflation rate” since 2018, pledging to push inflation into single digits this fiscal year.

Yet, a recent commentary published by Addis Standard cautions that “inflation has remained stubbornly high for an extended period, eroding the purchasing power of consumers and undermining economic confidence.” According to the article, cumulative price increases reached 212.65% between 2020/21 and 2024/25, meaning an item costing 100 birr in 2020/21 now costs about 312.65 birr.

#Opinion: Aesthetics of Outrage: Why beauty dictates our empathy for victims of sexual violence

In this opinion piece, Eyob Yohannes asks whether our empathy is truly moral or just aesthetic, noting that compassion often “behaves like taste.” He highlights how, amid widespread gender-based violence in #Ethiopia, public outrage fixates on victims who are “strikingly beautiful,” arguing that attention goes mostly to “those whose faces fit society’s aesthetic ideal.”

“We are moved not just by pain, but by how that pain looks,” Eyob writes. This “moral vanity” turns empathy into performance, where “beauty becomes the medium of morality,” letting us feel righteous without confronting injustice’s harsh reality.

True morality, the author contends, begins when empathy “no longer needs beauty to function”—when we honor dignity in every face, not just the photogenic ones. Until then, we remain “aesthetes of morality,” mourning selectively, not justly.

News: #Tigray interim admin warns against unilateral return of IDPs without #Pretoria framework

Tigray interim administration has urged the federal government to ensure the return of internally displaced persons (#IDPs) and the protection of Tigray’s territorial integrity strictly through the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.

In a statement the bureau of communication affairs of Tigray issued late Tuesday, the Bureau said the “return of IDPs and the security of Tigray’s territorial land will be achieved only through the Pretoria Agreement,” accusing the federal government of delaying the full execution of the deal signed three years ago to end the two-year devastating war.

The Bureau said any move by the federal government to “ignore the Pretoria Agreement and return IDPs on its own without the consent of the people, the Tigray Interim Administration, or the negotiating bodies is unacceptable.”
