A relative of Suye Kutala, a nine-month pregnant woman allegedly killed by security forces last August in the Guji Zone of the #Oromia region, has reportedly been detained, family members and neighbors of the Saba Boru district told Addis Standard.
Suye, a resident of Buke Sire Kebele in the Saba Boru district, was shot dead on 8 August 2025 while guarding her six-year-old child and working on her farmland. Family members said that on the night of 19 September, security forces returned to her home, set fire to property, including a grain storage facility, and detained four relatives.
“They burned our home and took away our family members,” a relative who requested anonymity for safety reasons told Addis Standard.
A neighbor recalled that prior to her killing, police accused Suye of being linked to an armed group and that she had been threatened by government-aligned militias.

World Bank raises Sub-Sahara #Africa growth forecast on inflation
Sub-Saharan African economies are expected to grow by a faster 3.8% this year on the back of stable prices that have spurred easing by policymakers, the World Bank said on Tuesday, and the momentum will increase in the next two years.
The upgrade from 3.5% in April was driven by stabilising foreign exchange and inflation rates in countries like #Ethiopia, giving room for interest rate cuts, the bank said in its biannual Africa Pulse report.
"These favourable conditions are fuelling a recovery in private consumption and investment," the bank said in the report. However, fiscal consolidation efforts could curb the pace of recovery in some economies, the report warned.

Rising Nile waters inundated homes and fields in northern Egypt over the weekend, forcing residents to move by boat and intensifying a war of words between Cairo and Addis Ababa over whether Ethiopia's giant Nile dam has worsened seasonal floods.
In the Nile Delta village of Dalhamo, in Menoufia Governorate, some 50 km (31 miles) northwest of Cairo, men paddled wooden boats through narrow lanes where water lapped at the walls of their homes.
The Nile has long been affected by seasonal flooding due to monsoon rainfall in the Ethiopian Highlands that usually peaks in July and August. But this year a late-season surge has pushed north from Ethiopia, through Sudan, and into Egypt.
In Sudan, the U.N. migration agency said floods in Bahri, Khartoum state, displaced about 1,200 families last week and destroyed homes, compounding an 18-month war that has crippled the country's response.
Egypt's Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry has accused Ethiopia of "reckless unilateral" operation of its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, saying sharp, unannounced swings in water releases after the dam's September 9 inauguration helped trigger a "man-made, late flood".
In a statement on October 4, its Water and Energy Ministry said regulated releases from the Blue Nile project had reduced flood impacts and that without it heavy rain "would have caused historic destruction in Sudan and Egypt".

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has announced plans to accelerate the introduction of Swahili into the national curriculum for schools and universities as part of Somalia’s efforts to deepen integration within the East African Community (EAC).
Swahili, East Africa’s lingua franca and one of the continent’s most widely spoken languages, will be promoted as both a working and instructional language alongside Somali, Arabic, and English, aligning with Somalia’s new membership in the regional bloc.
Speaking at the 2nd East African Community Cooperation Conference (EACON2025) in Mogadishu on Tuesday, President Mohamud urged Somali universities to take the lead in teaching and using Swahili to strengthen regional unity and cooperation.
