Defiance and resilience: What explains the unexpected results for 12th-Grade exams in post-war #Tigray region

Startling statistics recently revealed that only 3.3% of students who took the 12th-grade exit exams across #Ethiopia achieved a score above 50%. This disappointing trend has persisted for the past two years, prompting frustration and criticism from members of parliament. In an unexpected turn of events, the war-torn region of Tigray emerged as a beacon of hope, with an impressive 66.96% of grade 12 students achieving a passing mark.

Among the top performers is 21-year-old Ataklti Mebrahtu, despite being disabled due to the conflict. Ataklti's determination and refusal to be defined by his disability enabled him to score an impressive 556, placing him among the top ten students in his school. His journey was marred by the war and the COVID-19 pandemic, but he remained resilient. While he mourns the loss of classmates and friends, Ataklti remains committed to advocating for Tigray children's return to school.

A total of 9,514 students took the exams in Tigray, with natural science and social science courses being favored. The success was attributed to factors such as age, concentration, and resilience. Despite the challenges faced, Tigray's students have displayed commendable determination.

#Ethiopia: #Fincha Sugar Factory faces prolonged delay in resuming operations, impacting employees and economy

The Fincha Sugar Factory, a prominent and historically significant sugar factory in Western #Oromia, has yet to resume operations after closing down five months ago. The factory's closure for maintenance purposes has led to severe consequences for both employees and the economy.

Damage to vital equipment and a scarcity of foreign currency have hindered the factory's ability to produce sugar. Additionally, the factory has suffered from significant damage to vehicles and agriculture machinery, resulting in a considerable financial loss. Previous suspensions of production were also caused by conflicts in the region.
