NASA confirmed that Earth has a temporary companion known as a "quasi-moon," designated 2025 PN7, which has been with us since the 1960s and will remain until about 2083. This object is not a true moon but an asteroid that follows a similar orbit around the Sun as Earth.
This celestial body was identified by the University of Hawaii and has been accompanying Earth for about 60 years.
Characteristics of 2025 PN7
Size and Orbit:
•Size: 2025 PN7 measures approximately 18 to 36 meters wide.
•Orbit: Unlike the traditional moon, it does not orbit Earth but follows a similar path around the Sun, appearing to move in sync with our planet.
Duration
•Timeframe: This quasi-moon is expected to remain in proximity to Earth until around 2083, after which it will drift away.
Differences from the Traditional Moon
•Gravitational Influence: 2025 PN7 does not exert any gravitational effects on Earth, such as influencing tides.
•Distance: It stays about 4 million kilometers away from Earth, making it more like a companion than a true moon.
NASA's findings highlight the fascinating dynamics of celestial bodies in our solar system, showcasing how Earth can have temporary companions that are not gravitationally bound.
