Deep dive: autoplay video hero vs static image hero
Video backgrounds in the hero look premium, so the assumption is they convert. The evidence is more conditional than the design trend suggests.
What the research shows: video can lift conversion when it carries information a static frame can't — EyeWonder and various landing-page case studies report 20-30% lifts where video demonstrates a product in use. But Google's own web performance research is blunt about the cost: hero video is among the heaviest things you can load, and every additional second to Largest Contentful Paint correlates with measurable bounce increases (the SOASTA/Akamai aggregate found bounce probability rising ~32% as load goes from 1 to 3 seconds).
The mechanism is a tradeoff between persuasion and time-to-first-meaning. A static hero renders the value proposition essentially instantly — message match is available before the visitor decides to stay. An autoplay video delays that meaning behind a load, and on mobile data it often doesn't autoplay at all, leaving a poster frame that should have just been the static hero in the first place.
Practical implication for affiliate landers: use video only when motion encodes the offer — a tool's UI in action, a result happening. If the video is ambient B-roll of smiling people, it's pure weight with no message-match payoff; ship the static frame. When you do use video, the poster image must stand alone as a complete hero, because a large share of mobile users will only ever see it.
TL;DR:
— Video wins when motion shows the product working; it loses when it's decorative
— Hero video delays time-to-first-meaning and inflates LCP, where bounce risk lives
— Always design the poster frame as a fully working static hero — many users see only that

Deep dive: long-form vs short-form sales page — and the variable everyone skips
The long-vs-short debate is usually argued as a fixed rule. It isn't a property of the page; it's a property of the decision.
What the data shows: classic direct-response tests (Marketing Experiments, Crazy Egg's own redesign which famously grew its page ~20x and lifted conversions ~30%) show long copy winning for high-consideration offers. But equally documented are SaaS and lead-gen tests where trimming a page lifted conversion 10-15%. The contradiction resolves when you control for one variable: how much the visitor needs to know to feel the perceived risk is acceptable.
The mechanism is risk resolution. Copy length is a tool for lowering perceived risk — each objection handled, each proof shown, reduces the felt danger of saying yes. A $7 tripwire carries almost no risk, so long copy adds cognitive load without buying anything. A $2,000 course or a 'enter your card' offer carries high risk, and short copy leaves objections unanswered, so the visitor leaves to 'think about it' and never returns.
Practical implication for affiliate landers: don't pick length by taste. Estimate the visitor's perceived risk — price, commitment, unfamiliarity of the brand. Low risk plus warm traffic equals short. High risk or cold traffic equals long, but 'long' must be skimmable: front-loaded value proposition, subheads that tell the story alone, proof near each claim. Length without structure is just more to bounce from.
TL;DR:
— Copy length is a dial for resolving perceived risk, not a style preference
— Low-risk/warm-traffic offers convert better short; high-risk/cold offers need long copy
— Long only works if it's skimmable — subheads must carry the argument on their own

Deep dive: testimonial carousel vs stacked testimonials
Carousels save vertical space, which is why designers love them and why the data quietly hates them.
What the research shows: Nielsen Norman Group's carousel usability work and the often-cited Notre Dame 'carousel interaction' study found that auto-rotating carousels get the vast majority of clicks on the first slide (one report: ~89% of slide views and ~1% click-through on slides 2+). The effect is banner blindness plus motion that moves the content away before it's read. Stacked testimonials — all visible, scrolled through linearly — get read because they sit in the natural F-pattern of the scroll.
The mechanism is reading control and trust density. Social proof works by accumulation: the felt safety comes from seeing many independent voices, not one. A carousel shows one at a time and auto-advances, so the visitor never perceives the volume — and auto-motion next to a claim can even read as a slideshow ad, raising perceived risk. A stacked block lets the eye sample several at once, registering 'lots of people' as a single impression.
Practical implication for affiliate landers: stack your proof. If space is the concern, that's a signal you have too much else competing above the fold, not that the testimonials should hide. Three to five short, attributed, specific testimonials in a visible column beat a ten-slide carousel almost every time. If you must use motion, make it manual-advance only — never auto-rotate next to a conversion decision.
TL;DR:
— Auto-carousels concentrate nearly all attention on slide one; the rest is effectively invisible
— Social proof works by perceived volume, which a one-at-a-time carousel destroys
— Stack 3-5 specific, attributed testimonials in the F-pattern; if you carousel, manual-advance only
