The fear has always been the same: "This will take our jobs!"

But history teaches us otherwise.

Compilers didn't eliminate programmers—they elevated the craft.

They freed us from tedium and allowed us to solve bigger problems.

Today's AI is the new compiler.

Here's my controversial take: AI won't replace engineers.

It will replace people who were never really engineering in the first place.

The real dividing line?

True engineering is about solving complex problems that AI can't touch:
• Understanding hardware limitations
• Debugging timing issues with logic analyzers
• Knowing why specific register sequences matter
• Designing systems that meet real-world constraints

AI excels at generating code from requirements.

But it has no concept of the physical world or business context.

The compiler didn't kill programming—it created demand for better programmers.

AI will do the same.

It's the ultimate filter that will reveal who the real problem-solvers are.

So the question isn't whether AI will take your job.

The question is:
Are you merely a programmer, or are you truly an engineer? 🤔

I just vibe coded a Telegram bot to check Grade 12 results: @ThankYouBirhanu_bot (took me about 30 mins, don’t expect magic).

It might be pretty fast though, so worth giving it a try.

Why I built it: my cousin sent me his admission number and name, asking me to check his result. Like any normal person, I went to the website but it wasn’t working. To make things worse, every time you refresh the page, you have to re enter the admission number and name. So I wrote a quick Python script to hit the API multiple times with exponential backoff until it worked. Luckily that approach was super fast. From there I turned it into a Telegram bot.

TL;DR: I built a simple Telegram bot to check Grade 12 results and I’m bragging about it. (Mind you, I don’t even own the code, the AI does 😁)

Bring back the high school Abdu

Back in the days, I used to study 11 subjects at school. Five days a week. All day long. I’d get back home, do my homework, finish assignments, study..and never fail to complete any of my tasks.

These days, I skip classes. I never do schoolwork on time. I don’t study until the night before the exam. Yet I still complain about not having enough time to finish my daily tasks.

I don’t know what I lost along the way, but for sure, that high school version of me is missed. I want him back 😭
