🐒 The App Built to Destroy Servers... On Purpose 💥

Most developers spend their entire careers trying to prevent their applications from crashing

But in 2011, Netflix engineers did something completely unexpected

They built a tool called Chaos Monkey 🐒

Its job?

To intentionally introduce failures into live systems

Sounds crazy, right? 👀

But there was a reason behind it

Instead of waiting for systems to fail unexpectedly, engineers deliberately created failures to test whether their applications could handle disruptions and recover properly

Chaos Monkey could randomly terminate AWS EC2 instances and observe how the system responded

The idea was simple :
💥 Break the system
🔍 Find the weaknesses
🚀 Build something stronger

Because infrastructure failures shouldn't automatically become outages for users.

It's like hiring someone to throw rocks at your windows just to make sure they're actually unbreakable 😂

And that's the idea behind chaos engineering: intentionally testing failure so you can build systems that are more resilient when real failures happen

Netflix relies heavily on AWS (Amazon Web Services) to support its platform at massive global scale ☁️

And AWS is owned by Amazon

So, while Amazon competes with Netflix through Prime Video, its cloud business also provides infrastructure that helps Netflix serve millions of viewers worldwide

Competition and collaboration can exist at the same time

It’s a great example of a simple business principle:
Use the best tool for the job ... even when it comes from a competitor

FROM CURIOSITY TO CLOUD ☁️

What does curiosity look like when you actually follow it?

During our 2nd AWS SBG AASTU Community Event, Gedion Daniel shared how his journey into cloud and AWS started.

He was self-taught, tried different learning opportunities, and most importantly, kept building.

One of his early projects, Abe Garage, taught him something important: writing code is one thing, but building something that actually needs to work is completely different

Then came AWS 🚀

He launched a server using Amazon EC2 and saw his work running in the cloud for the first time

That first experience turned curiosity into something bigger
