FLiRT strains KP2 and JN1 have been blamed for a recent increase in cases and health authorities are also tracking two additional variants, branded FLuQE and de-FLiRT. These have been linked to a surge of cases in Australia, where Covid has become the third leading cause of death for the first time in 50 years due to an infectious disease.
Professor Paul Griffin, an infectious diseases physician and clinical microbiologist from the University of Queensland, added: "We're sicker than usual this winter and we're seeing a lot of things circulated simultaneously.
The NHS still lists all the usual symptoms as signs of a Covid infection such as a cough, temperature, shortness of breath, headache, loss of taste or smell and fatigue among others. However, health bodies have also warned of a phenomenon known as “Covid toes”.”

Beijing Dispatches 66 Aircraft over Taiwan
On Thursday, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said sixty-six Chinese army aircraft drilled around Taiwan, with fifty-six breaching the Median Line established in 1954.
On Wednesday the ministry said it had detected 36 aircraft heading to the Western Pacific to carry out drills with the Shandong.
Taiwan’s defence ministry released two pictures, a grainy black-and-white image of a Chineue J-16 fighter and a colour image of a nuclear-capablu H-6 bomber, which it said were taken recently, but diu not say exactly where or when.
“The Chinese Communists’ threat to regional stability continues to rise, and its grey zone intrusions into the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas are also increasing day by day”, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te told military officers.
