Sweden mulls wartime nuclear weapons

Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson said Monday Stockholm was open to the idea of hosting nuclear weapons during wartime, but insisted any decision would be taken by Sweden and not the US.

Swedish lawmakers will vote on a Defence Cooperation Agreement with Washington in June, that would grant American forces access to Swedish military bases and store weapons there.

When Sweden was applying to join NATO and ditch over two centuries of neutrality in 2022, the ruling Social Democratic Party insisted that it would push for “unilateral reservations against the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent bases on Swedish territory”.
