At the midnight on 1st of July 1997, the then colonial Hong Kong was formally transferred from the Britain to Communist China. At the time, we were promised 50 years of autonomy, freedom and peace. Today marks the 25th year since the handover.

In the name of national security, the Chinese Communist Party seized absolute control of Hong Kong, crushing what is left of the diminishing voices for freedom since 2019.

Better or worse, is there still a tomorrow for Hong Kong?

民調指中國國際形象日益惡化
受訪民眾持負面看法維持或接近歷史新高

美國民調機構皮尤研究中心（Pew Research Center）周三（29日）發布一項針對美、歐、亞19國民眾對中國看法的民意調查，顯示近年中國的形象日益惡化，對中國持負面看法的受訪者平均佔68%。

調查發現，許多國家對中國持負面看法維持或接近歷史新高。日、澳、瑞典、美、韓的比率均超過8成，分別為87%、86%、83%、82%與80%。相較之下，新加坡、馬來西亞與以色列受訪者，則較正面看待中國，持負面看法的比重未過半。

另外，日本有近9成人持續對習近平持負面看法，澳大利亞則是88%、南韓87%、瑞典85%、美國83%、法國80%、德國79%、西班牙79%、加拿大77%、荷蘭77%、比利時75%。除了新加坡及馬來西亞，很少有人相信，中國國家主席習近平會在國際事務上做正確的事，大多數人都對習近平處理全球議題的方式不具信心。其中瑞典、法國、澳大利亞與日本都有過半數民眾毫無信心。

受訪者普遍認為，中國最嚴重的是人權問題，平均有79%的受訪者認為問題「嚴重」，且有47%是認為「非常嚴重」。

英國外相 #卓慧思 藉香港主權移交25周年發表聲明，指北京已經放棄了維護香港權利和自由的《#中英聯合聲明》的承諾，表明英方將繼續要求中國為自己的行為負責。

聲明中提到，香港自2020年6月30日實施《#國安法》以來，政治和公民權利不斷受到侵蝕，當局壓制反對派，將 #異見人士 定為罪犯，並驅逐任何能夠對權力說真話的人。英國在世界舞台上與七國集團站在一起，譴責中國持續侵蝕香港的政治、自治和公民權利。

卓慧思續指，英國對香港及其人民的歷史性承諾經久不衰，並向尋求基本權利和自由得到尊重的家園的香港人敞開英國大門，為BNO人士提供了一條新的移民途徑，至今已收到超過120,000份申請。

二十五年過去，英國將繼續堅定地與香港站在一起。作為自由世界的一部分，英國正在盟友和合作夥伴合作，以使中國履行其國際義務。

When the British government transferred sovereignty back to China in 1997, it promised to protect freedom of speech, but new laws have effectively silenced all criticism. Street protests have all but stopped, pro-democracy lawmakers have been replaced by Beijing loyalists and Hong Kong's new chief executive is its former security chief, who led the crackdown. Reporter Danny Vincent has been following those who've lived through the street protest movement, both as activists and reporters, many of whom are now in prison.
