Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on 10th Jan

A lunar eclipse is an astrological phenomenon where the Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon, either partially or totally.

This eclipse will be the first of the four penumbral lunar eclipses which may take place this year.

A penumbral eclipse is a little difficult to observe as it is usually darker. This happens because the Sun, the Earth and the Moon do not form a perfectly straight line. During the penumbral eclipse, the Earth doesn’t exactly block sunlight from reaching the Moon, rather it covers all or a portion of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow.

Vertical Farming

In vertical farming, crops are grown indoors, under artificial conditions of light and temperature.

It aims at higher productivity in smaller spaces.
It uses soil-less methods such as hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics.
Vertical farming uses significantly less water and pesticides than traditional agricultural methods. Being indoors, the crops aren't subject to seasons and hence give high productivity year-round. Lettuces, tomatoes and green crops can be produced through this practice.

Britain’s parliament finally approved Brexit, allowing it to become the first country to leave the European Union by the end of this month.

Impact on India

Positive Impact Of Brexit On India
1. Free trade agreement:

After losing access to the EU single market, the UK would want to develop trade relations with emerging markets around the world. India, with strong economic fundamentals and a large domestic market, is in a better position.

2. Easy market access:

India is a significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for the UK because many Indian firms have used it as a gateway to the EU single market. Initially, after divorcing from the EU, the UK wouldn’t like to miss Indian investment. It will attract Indian firms by offering more incentives such as tax break, relaxed regulations and opening up markets.

Negative Impact Of Brexit On India
1. The UK has always been a gateway for Indian firms to enter the EU single market. After Brexit, this may cause short term distress on Indian firms.

2. The second impact would be visible on currency volatility as there would be devolution of Pound and Euro due to Brexit. Indian companies with sizable presence will have to bear the brunt.

3. With Brexit, there will be a considerable spike in the price of imports, foods and other everyday commodities, which will impact Indian firms.

4. Brexit can affect Indian flagship IT market sector, given that EU accounts for 17 % of the global market and UK accounts for solely 3% out of that 17%. Brexit will increase overhead cost and setting up of new headquarters perhaps, in both EU and UK separately.

Supreme Court on Juvenile Justice Act

The Supreme Court on Thursday held that a "gross mistake" had been committed by framers of the
Juvenile Justice Act that allows a  juvenile to evade being treated as an adult in grave offences such as
homicide not amounting to murder, as these crimes do not carry a minimum sentence.

Under the JJ Act, offences have been put into three categories -

1. Petty offences for which maximum punishment is imprisonment up to three years
2. Serious offences involving a jail term of 3-7 years
3. Heinous offences for which minimum punishment is seven years.

The court said there was a fourth category where no minimum sentence was prescribed but where the maximum sentence was more than seven years - like homicide not amounting to murder or abetment to suicide

Women with disabilities are often subjected to double discrimination due to their gender and disability status and continue to be at a disadvantage in most spheres of society and development. Available data suggests that the gap is stark compared with men without disabilities: women with disabilities are three times more likely to have unmet needs for health care; three times more likely to be illiterate; two times less likely to be employed and two times less likely to use the Internet. Moreover, women with disabilities are at heightened risk of suffering sexual violence compared to those without disabilities.
