The Bible Is On Trial In Finland. Will You Stand With Päivi?

Have you ever posted a Bible verse on social media? In Finland, that could land you in jail.

Päivi Räsänen's story is so important that I just had to share it with you.

When Päivi’s church, the Finnish Lutheran Church, decided to sponsor the LGBT event "Pride 2019," she spoke up.

She addressed the leadership of her church in a tweet and questioned its sponsorship of the event. Along with her question, she included an image of Romans 1:24-27. ⬇️

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, & worshipped & served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, & receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

From that point on, Päivi has been at the center of a modern-day heresy trial.

The medical doctor, mother of five, grandmother of nine, and longtime Member of the Finnish Parliament is facing three criminal charges for... a tweet.

She's accused of "hate speech" and faces more than $20,000 in fines for tweeting & writing about the Bible & Christian teaching on marriage & sexuality. The law itself even allows for imprisonment.
 
Here's what happened to Päivi—& how you can stand with her.

Police interrogated Päivi about the tweet. They grilled her about her Christian beliefs, what the Bible teaches, & about what her tweet meant.

Then the prosecution dug into her past & unearthed comments she made about marriage and human sexuality in a 2004 pamphlet she wrote for fellow Christians and in a 2019 debate on a popular talk radio show.

They even asked Päivi to recant her beliefs—in writing. She refused.

Päivi's trial ended earlier this month. ADF sat in the courtroom & what they witnessed shocked them.

The prosecutor claimed this case isn't about Christianity. That it's not about the Bible—or even Päivi's beliefs.

But the prosecutor immediately made it all about the Bible, all about her beliefs, & all about Christianity. On day one of the trial, the prosecutor began the day by reading from the Old Testament.

There is no question that biblical teaching itself is on trial in Päivi's case.

This is alarming. That this heresy trial is taking place in Finland should serve as a warning to the rest of Europe & to Americans.

If you think this can't happen where you live, you're wrong.

Bills like the "Equality Act" in the United States pose threats similar to those raised by so-called "hate speech" laws in Europe.

If made law, the "Equality Act" would coerce uniformity of speech & action reflecting biblical beliefs about marriage, sex, & what it means to be male & female. President Biden has committed to signing the legislation if it's passed by the House & the Senate.

But as George Orwell once wrote, "If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."

Päivi isn't wavering & she knows what's at stake. If someone like her, a respected government official, isn't safe to say what she believes, then who is?

"I will defend my right to confess my faith, so that no one else would be deprived of their right to freedom of religion & speech," she has said."... The more Christians keep silent on controversial themes, the narrower the space for freedom of speech gets.”
