Generally speaking, since Trump was talking about how the Mexican government works for the cartels saying,

"The cartels are running Mexico."

and how he wanted to do something about that, I'm sure the US had its fingerprints all over this, especially given the fact that the U.S. had been offering a $15 million reward for his capture.

Additionally, the Mexican government is illegally sending cartel members to the U.S. without extradition orders.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”), leader of the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), was killed in a Mexican Army operation reportedly involving a Pentagon task force, according to CBS.

His death sparked nationwide CJNG retaliation, including arson, blockades, airport disruptions, & threats against civilians & American citizens in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, & Nuevo León, with major incidents in Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Cancún, Tijuana, & other tourist areas. U.S. citizens were told to shelter in place; Mexico shut down some airspace, & Air Canada suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta.

The heavily armed cartel—equipped with trafficked U.S. & European weapons, armored vehicles, explosives, & drones—remains in active conflict with Mexican forces. Fires at businesses, including an Oxxo, caused injuries, including smoke inhalation & one hospitalization.
