🇺🇸 🇻🇪 🇷🇺 US Seizes 2 Sanctioned Oil Tankers Linked to Venezuela

The United States has seized two sanctioned oil tankers linked to Venezuela in coordinated, back-to-back operations in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean, U.S. officials confirmed Wednesday.

The first vessel, originally known as Bella I, had been pursued by U.S. forces since last month after attempting to evade a U.S. blockade targeting sanctioned oil shipments connected to Venezuela. During its flight, the tanker changed its name to Marinera, repainted its hull, and reflagged under the Russian flag, becoming part of what U.S. officials describe as Russia’s “shadow fleet.”

The tanker is under U.S. sanctions for transporting Iranian oil tied to groups including Hezbollah and for operating in violation of U.S. restrictions on Venezuela. According to U.S. officials cited by Reuters, the ship fled from the Caribbean toward northern Russia, prompting a more than two-week pursuit across the Atlantic by U.S. Coast Guard and Navy vessels, including through severe storms.

Russia reportedly dispatched a submarine and surface vessels from its Northern Fleet to assist or escort the tanker, but they failed to reach it in time. U.S. European Command (EUCOM) later confirmed the seizure of the Russian-flagged Marinera in the Atlantic Ocean, stating that Russian escort vessels did not arrive before U.S. forces acted.

EUCOM initially announced the seizure of Bella I in a social media post, citing “violations of U.S. sanctions.” Shortly afterward, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem revealed that U.S. forces had also seized a second tanker, the Sophia, in international waters near the Caribbean. Both vessels were linked to Venezuela.

Noem detailed the operations in a public statement:

“In two predawn operations today, the Coast Guard conducted back-to-back meticulously coordinated boarding of two ‘ghost fleet’ tanker ships—one in the North Atlantic Sea and one in international waters near the Caribbean. Both vessels—the Motor Tanker Bella I and the Motor Tanker Sophia—were either last docked in Venezuela or en route to it.”

She emphasized the interagency coordination behind the seizures:

“Under President Trump’s bold and visionary leadership, U.S. Coast Guard tactical teams worked closely with their counterparts at the Departments of War, Department of Justice, and State and used their specialized expertise to conduct these operations and conduct two safe, effective boardings within hours of each other.”

Highlighting the pursuit of Bella I/Marinera, Noem added:

"One of these tankers, Motor Tanker Bella I, has been trying to evade the Coast Guard for weeks, even changing its flag and painting a new name on the hull while being pursued, in a desperate and failed attempt to escape justice. The heroic crew of the USCGC Munro pursued this vessel across the high seas and through treacherous storms—keeping diligent watch, and protecting our country with the determination and patriotism that make Americans proud."

She concluded with a warning:

“The world’s criminals are on notice. You can run, but you can’t hide. We will never relent in our mission to protect the American people and disrupt the funding of narco-terrorism wherever we find it, period.
This is our country’s greatest fighting force at their best. This is America first at sea."

Despite reported Russian military involvement, U.S. forces successfully seized both tankers, ending Marinera’s attempted escape and marking a high-profile enforcement action against sanctioned oil trafficking and illicit maritime networks.
