Citing official sources, the WSJ says the operation was carried out by U.S. special forces operating under INDOPACOM, to “prevent Tehran from rebuilding its arsenal” after the conflict with Israel. The ship was intercepted, its cargo seized, & later destroyed, with Washington claiming the shipment constituted maritime smuggling & that it was "intended for the rehabilitation & strengthening of Iran's missile program."

According to the report, a U.S. security official said that "the cargo contained components that are part of Iran's conventional missile project, and their interception is part of a goal set by the Pentagon to disrupt the smuggling routes of critical components for Tehran's military programs."
