Washington — An Obama-appointed federal judge on Monday denied a request from the Trump administration to unseal grand jury material in the case of Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.

Judge Paul Engelmayer of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York rejected the Justice Department's bid to unveil the material in a 31-page order Monday morning.

In court filings, Justice Department lawyers argued the circumstances of the Maxwell case warranted the release of the grand jury transcripts and exhibits, which typically remain secret. Engelmayer rejected that argument.

"The Government's invocation of special circumstances, however, fails at the threshold," Engelmayer wrote. "Its entire premise — that the Maxwell grand jury materials would bring to light meaningful new information about Epstein's and Maxwell's crimes, or the Government's investigation into them — is demonstrably false."

On July 16, during the fighting in Suwayda, soldiers from the Syrian army and members of the Syrian Internal Security Forces raided the hospital in Suwayda. From security camera footage published on August 10 (see pictures), it can be seen that during the raid the soldiers arrested the hospital staff and executed at least one hospital staff member. Additionally, some of the soldiers were identified with ISIS symbols on their uniforms. During the fighting in Suwayda, at least 1,000 soldiers from the New Syrian Army participated. The military force was composed of soldiers sent and arriving from at least 9 different divisions, some of which were made up of militias with jihadist orientation. It is possible that the soldiers identified with ISIS symbols at the hospital came from the 82nd Division of the New Syrian Army, whose soldiers were identified in the combat area with ISIS flags and symbols. This division originally operates in the Hama and Syrian coast area, in the former 25th Division area of Assad's army. The division commander is Khaled Muhammad Halabi (Abu Hatab – his photo is attached), a former officer in Assad's army who defected after the outbreak of the civil war. Over the years, Halabi advanced in the rebel service until he became the commander of the Ansar al-Tawhid organization (formerly called Jund al-Aqsa). This organization has an extreme jihadist-Salafi ideology and apparently even cooperated with ISIS at certain times. Halabi is considered one of the prominent figures behind the planning and execution of the rebel attack that led to the fall of Assad's regime.

More than 400 acts of hostility were recorded against churches in the United States in 2024, with a sharp rise in gun-related incidents, according to a new report released by the Family Research Council.

The incidents highlighted in the group's "Hostility against Churches in the United States" report released Monday morning ranged from vandalism and arson to gun-related threats, bomb hoaxes and physical assaults.

Why Israel Is Entitled to Annex the Gaza Strip Under International Law

International law is clear: sovereignty is not just a flag and de facto control—it must also be legitimate.
When the entity controlling a territory is a terrorist organization like Hamas, its sovereignty is neither legal nor recognized. It is not a “state,” not a “government,” but an illegitimate armed force.
Legally, this means one simple thing: the territory is without a sovereign (terra nullius).

What does this mean?
In a territory without a sovereign, a state may, under certain circumstances, apply its sovereignty if the conditions of security necessity, effective control, and acceptance or recognition by the international community (even if partial at first) are met.

Gaza today fits exactly this case:
   •   There is no lawful sovereign.
   •   The de facto regime commits war crimes and poses existential threats.
   •   Removing the threat requires not only dismantling Hamas but also changing the legal status of the territory to prevent the return of terrorism in the future.

And what about the population?
History and law recognize cases of population exchange and voluntary migration as ways to end violent conflicts:
   •   Greece–Turkey (1923) – a large-scale population exchange that ended decades of wars.
   •   India–Pakistan (1947) – population transfers following territorial partition.
   •   Czechoslovakia–Germany (1945) – removal of hostile populations to end conflict.

When people live in a hostile territory from which organized terrorism is carried out against a sovereign state, offering voluntary migration routes to third countries—accompanied by economic incentives and international arrangements—is legal, humane, and sometimes the only way to bring peace and security to both sides.

So, what have we learned?
When the “sovereign” is a terrorist organization, it is not a sovereign under international law. When the territory is without a sovereign, it may—and in some cases should—be annexed. And when its inhabitants choose not to live in peace with their neighbors, offering a fair opportunity for voluntary migration is a historically recognized way to resolve bloody conflicts.
