Another Report Finds CBP and ICE Are Not Detaining or Removing Illegal Travelers

A new report from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has highlighted ongoing issues with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processes at a major international airport. Between fiscal years 2021 and 2023, CBP agents at this airport released at least 383 inadmissible travelers into the U.S. who were legally prohibited from entering the country. Instead of detaining and processing them for removal, these travelers were released and ordered to return on their own recognizance, with 168 (44%) failing to return for their removal flights.

Philippines Says it Won't Back Down, But Won't Start a War, After Clash With Chinese Coast Guard

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Chinese forces seized two Philippine rubber boats that were delivering food and other supplies to a military outpost in a disputed South China Sea shoal in a tense confrontation in which some Filipino navy personnel were injured, Philippine security officials said Tuesday.

The president of the Philippines said Sunday his country would not yield to “any foreign power” after Chinese forces injured Filipino navy personnel and damaged at least two military boats with machetes, axes and hammers in a clash in the "disputed" South China Sea, but added the Philippines would never instigate a war.

The United States renewed a warning Tuesday that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, a treaty ally, a day after the hourslong hostilities in Second Thomad Shoal. The shoal has been occupied by a small Philippine navy contingent aboard a long-grounded warship that has been closely monitored by China’s coast guard and navy in a yearslong territorial standoff.

The tensions between China and the Philippines continue to escalate. Manila accused Beijing yesterday that a sailor in the Philippine Navy was injured and lost a finger following a raid by the Chinese Coast Guard on his boat in the South China Sea, in an area considered to be Philippine territorial waters. The Philippines also said that the Chinese confiscated weapons and equipment from the boat and damaged it, and are now demanding to get the things back together with financial compensation.
