Fulani Muslim Christmas Killing Spree Leaves 170 Christians Dead in Nigeria

Fulani Muslims carried out coordinated attacks on Christians over Christmas in 26 villages of Nigeria’s Middle Belt, leaving some 170 dead.

“The unprovoked attacks were well-coordinated and deliberate, specifically targeting  Christian communities,” said Father Andrew Dewan, communications director for the Pankshin Diocese, where the killings took place. “I can confirm that the victims are 100 percent Christian.”

“For those who believe that this conflict is not religious, this latest attack proves that it is clearly a religious conflict,” Dewan said.
“The fact that it took place at Christmas, and the deliberate targeting of Christians in a mixed community where Muslims are not attacked, clearly bears all the hallmarks of a religious conflict,” he added.

2023 was a rather bad year.
Not as bad as 2024 is likely to be, or as 2020 was.
But bad.

Nonetheless, we ought to learn from the bad as well as the good. So, in a spirit of reflection, I offer a few lessons we ought to remember from this crummy year.

Lesson No. 1: Lots of people do not think like we do. And failure to recognize the truth of this lesson leads to failures of imagination that in turn lead to suffering and death.

When Hamas slaughters infants in their cribs, rapes women in front of their husbands and takes them captive back to Gaza, and tortures and murders civilians, that isn't because of some outsized grievance. It's because they  do not have the same values as Westerners. Pretending that members of Hamas are simply freedom-loving people who seek material prosperity, quiet family lives and tolerance for those who think differently isn't just wrong; it's catastrophically wrong.

Ukraine Mounts Massive Series Of Attacks On Russian City, Killing At Least 14

Russia's Belgorod region, which lies just north of Kharkiv in Ukraine, was rocked by Ukrainian drone and missile fire which killed at least 14 people, with over 100 injured, according to revised updates. "According to updated information, 12 adults and two children were killed in Belgorod. Another 108 people, including 15 children, were injured," Russia's defense ministry said.

The death toll was so high due to the strikes on a residential area, the region's governor Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov indicated.

This major assault appears 'retaliation' by Ukraine for the major nationwide aerial strikes on Ukrainian cities that took place the day prior, where the rising death toll is at 39 Ukrainians killed.

God has ordained that only men are to serve in positions of spiritual teaching authority in the church. This does not imply men are better teachers or that women are inferior or less intelligent. It is simply the way God designed the church to function.

Men are to set the example in spiritual leadership—in their lives and through their words. Women are also to set an example in their lives, but in a different way (1 Peter 3:1-6).

Women are encouraged to teach other women (Titus 2:3–5).

The Bible also does not restrict women from teaching children. The only activity women are restricted from is teaching or having spiritual authority over men. This bars women from serving as pastors to men. This does not make women less important, by any means; rather, it gives them a ministry focus more in agreement with God’s design.
