Christian Charities on Frontlines Providing Earthquake Relief in Turkey, Syria: 'Families are Afraid'

Christian charities are on the frontlines in Syria and Turkey helping those impacted by the devastating magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 earthquakes and the 120 aftershocks that have left more than 11,200 dead and tens of thousands injured in what was one of the strongest to hit the region in more than 100 years.

Authorities have warned that the figures could continue to rise and that the chances of finding survivors under the rubble are rapidly diminishing amid freezing temperatures.

In wake of the tragedy, the Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse announced it's deploying a 52-bed Emergency Field Hospital and at least 75 staff to Turkey later this week to address the immediate medical needs of families impacted by the devastation. The hospital will include two emergency operating rooms.

Amid the devastation, many families have taken to sleeping in churches, convents or even hospitals. “At our hospital, there is a part that looks as though it may fall, the stones have moved, and we are afraid they will give out..."

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, on Wednesday penned a letter to Brian Boynton, the principal deputy assistant attorney general in the civil division, requesting that the Justice Dep. turn over documents that it provided in an earlier lawsuit filed by GOP-led states involving purported free speech violations.

The Hill obtained a copy of the letter, which requests that the materials are handed over by Feb. 22.

“The Committee on the Judiciary is conducting oversight of the Executive Branch’s efforts to sidestep the 1st Amendment by coercing & coordinating with private companies, including social media platforms, to suppress free speech & censor content online. As part of our oversight, we write to request a discrete set of documents & info that the DOJ has produced as part of discovery in federal litigation over the same subject matter.”
