versicolor or ቋቁቻ
Skin fungal infections

Tinea versicolor is a common fungal infection of the skin. The fungus interferes with the normal pigmentation of the skin, resulting in small, discolored patches. These patches may be lighter or darker in color than the surrounding skin and most commonly affect the trunk and shoulders.

Tinea versicolor (TIN-ee-uh vur-si-KUL-ur) occurs most frequently in teens and young adults. Sun exposure may make tinea versicolor more apparent. Tinea versicolor, which is also called pityriasis versicolor, is not painful or contagious. But it can lead to emotional distress or self-consciousness.

Antifungal creams, lotions or shampoos can help treat tinea versicolor. But even after successful treatment, skin color may remain uneven for several weeks or months. Tinea versicolor often recurs, especially in warm, humid weather.
================

#Dr_Mahlet_Tesfaye; Ethiopia’s first and only female Cardiothoracic Surgeon!

"Medicine | General Surgery | Cardiothoracic Surgery; How I reached where I am today"
…
Like most kids growing up, I wanted to become a physician. I had a fair share of visits to a hospital as a child- mostly due to accidents caused by my playfulness- nothing serious-broken bones and bruises. My mom, a nurse would stride past all those waiting in line to see the doctor in charge- that made quite an impression on me.
…
But when I joined med school - I hated it. The first three years- I was miserable. I wanted to quit. I was so sure I had made a mistake. I loved numbers, they made sense to me. I was a math & physics SCOLÉ. I didn’t know what to do with all the reading. Worse was all the memorizing of Latin and Greek names (of bacteria, drugs, body parts and the before birth embryogenesis) that had no logic to it.
…
Fourth year in med school, we were given patients to clerk. That changed my life. All the reading started to make sense to me. I was transformed. I spent all my spare time in the wards. What am I saying? I spent all my time in the wards. That did not go unnoticed by my teachers. They encouraged me, pushed me and expected more from me. I pushed myself. I tried to learn everything I can to become a good doctor. It was not about the grades. It was about becoming the best doctor I can be.
…
I was not always hailed by my classmates. Some boys would say that it was because I was a girl that I was getting attention and better treatment from my teachers. To which I would reply- “of course, he’d rather look at me than you, wouldn’t you?”
…
Lesson learned- You should & can change your track to achieve what you set out to. Don’t be put down by what people say about you. Define yourself and what you want to achieve.

Postgraduate -Surgery
…
After I graduated, and had been working for some time, I wanted to pursue surgery. Everybody told me not to. Everybody except few. Their reason was simple- there are no women in the field. PERIOD! And their argument- there are no women in the field for good reason- DUH!!!!!! IT IS SO physically DEMANDING that women cannot do it.

“You would be working for long hours. You would be attending lengthy procedures. You will have a hectic, stressful life. You will be on duty and working most days when everyone else is on holiday. You would not be able to enjoy your life. It can be draining emotionally. You will have no social life…You will not settle and lead a normal happy family life, that is if you can find someone to marry you. Being a doctor is bad enough, for your CV in the wanting to get married field, but becoming a surgeon is a suicide… There are easier ways of making money…”
…
I listened to every argument people came up with, and weighed it against what I’d miss if I settled, if I didn’t try. I brainstormed about the pros & cons of becoming a surgeon with my brother and sister. I prayed. I prayed to God to give me the strength. I trusted in Him. I knew I was strong enough to become a surgeon, and I didn’t think it was fair for anyone to ask me to sacrifice something I love doing.
…
When I sat for the entrance exam, nobody took me seriously. Most people thought I would join for the first year and drop out, they gave me a year, & then two, then they gave me till graduation, then that I would graduate but never continue to work.
…
Why did I decide to do it? In all honesty, I didn’t know that there were forbiddingly few women in the field, there are two female surgeons in the country preceding me, who graduated a decade ago. My teachers saw my interest in surgery and encouraged me to become a surgeon. In accordance with their recommendation and my passion, I applied. Then I learned that it was a “guys” thing. Nonetheless, I was not deterred. I told myself if I gave it my best and I fail that would be okay. But I did not want to let any one define what I can or cannot do.
…
If I had not done it, if I had shied away from pursuing my dream, I believe it was only a matter of time befo
re someone else pioneered in the field. Now there are several of us and more are coming. One male surgeon I know teases me saying- አስደፈርሽን!!!!!

Everyone was applauding me for becoming a surgeon. I was feeling all proud, but my dad was not finished with me. He told me to pursue my education & not too subtly- I was taken aback. After a year of becoming a surgeon, I also started to develop an itch. I wanted to acquire more skill. I told myself once again, if it proves to be “mission impossible’ then I’d quit. People would come to me and ask me how long I have been studying (FYI-16 years after high school). They would tell me that surgery was okay, but this was just overdoing it. They ask me what I was trying to prove.
…
My answer is simple. I was just doing what I loved with the life that was given to me. It was my life and I have no obligation to prove or disprove anything to anyone. I live my life as I see fit. If we trade places and I see someone doing what s/he loved, I would’ve been the first one applauding them.
…
No one seemed to be bothered by the three guys that were studying with me or seems to be bothering them, at least from my vantage point. A good friend of mine once told me that people are scared of something different. They cannot identify with it. It has to conform to ‘their way’. And God forbid, if it is different than ‘their way’, then it definitely has to fail. They cannot imagine as to how it can succeed. But along the way, I made some great friends.
…
Am I successful? Am I happy? Yes. But not because I am rich or famous. I am neither. My happiness stems neither from being the first nor the only one in my field. I actually hope the latter changes soon. I am happy because I accomplished what I set out to do in my life. I am grateful to God that He gave me the opportunity to be who I am today. I am happy because I am in a position to touch people’s lives, to give back to those who need my help.

We live in a male dominated society. In my profession, every woman is a nurse, from a nurse to a specialist or sub specialist for that matter. While every man is a doctor, from a porter wearing a white coat to a nurse and the physician. I believe women usually are better physicians. Rest assured, I am not a female chauvinist. I like men (one of our strongest suits). I don’t believe in superiority of either of the sexes. I believe we are different; men are better in some areas and so are we. I believe we are complementary. But I also believe that medicine is one of the areas where women perform better than men.

Never let someone to be the pioneer in what you wanted to experiment with. Pursue your dream with full vigor. Do what you always dreamed of doing. Even if it means that you would be the first one to do it. If you try with all your might and fail, then you will have no regrets. Never take people’s failures as your own and lose the heart to try. You were given different life to live. With that come opportunities, talents & assets that are unique to you. Use them to your advantage.
