MSC Gülsün, the world’s largest containership, has arrived in Europe after completing its voyage from the north of China as per information from Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
MSC Gülsün is the first of a new class of 23,000+TEU vessels to be added in 2019-2020 to the company’s global fleet. Ten other ships in this class have been ordered by MSC.
MSC Gülsün set a new standard in container shipping, in particular in terms of environmental performance.
As explained, this new class has been designed with environmental, efficiency, stability and safety matters in mind. One of the features is the vessel’s shape of the bow designed to enhance energy efficiency by reducing hull resistance. What is more, ship wind resistance is minimized, resulting in lower fuel consumption. Additionally, it is possible to connect the ship to shore power, enabling it to tap local power sources in port.
MSC Gülsün’s improved energy efficiency and fuel economy ensure that MSC is on track to meet international 2030 environmental policy targets set by the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) ahead of time, building on a 13 percent improvement in CO2 emissions per ton of cargo moved already achieved across the MSC fleet between 2015 and 2018, the company said.

According to IMO requirements, starting from the 1st of January 2020, about 60,000 vessels will be required to reduce sulfur oxide emissions. At the moment, the most optimal solution is using of low-sulfur fuel.💧
As per information from IMO, heavy fuel contains 3.5% sulfur.
This is that emissions that make the shipping industry one of the most “dirty” in the world – this is aboutr 13% of all sulfur oxide emissions.
New marine fuel will contain 0.5% sulfur.
It was estimated that this will take about $ 50 billion for the next 3-4 years.
Shipowners are concerned regarding such financial costs. They are also afraid of possibility that the demand for new “clean” fuel will exceed supply, and the vessels will simply be in docks and at the anchorage. In addition, nobody knows whether marine engines will work well on low-sulfur fuel.
Global operators even asked IMO to postpone their directive.
Greece was particularly active as a country holding more than 20% of the global merchant fleet.
Maersk announced that they will have a fully carbon-neutral fleet only by 2050.
Now there is also discussions regarding 🛳scrubbers - a device for cleaning the exhaust gases of a ship.
These devices cost between $ 3 and $ 10 million, but critics of the scrubbers claimed that the device only masks emissions of sulfur oxides as environmentally friendly.
Rolf Habben Jansen (Executive Director of Hapag-Lloyd (Germany) declared that company plan to install scrubbers only for 10 of their 227 vessels.

Italian energy services firm Saipem and the UAE’s Plambeck Emirates signed a memorandum of understanding to build Saudi Arabia’s first offshore floating wind farm, as the world’s largest oil exporter looks to incorporate more renewables into its energy mix.
The 500 megawatt project is part of the kingdom’s plan to incorporate 5 gigawatt of wind power into its grid.
Saudi Arabia has been looking at adopting cleaner forms of energy, switching its power stations from running on oil to gas, and solar and wind to free-up its crude for the export markets. In January the kingdom awarded its first wind project - a 400MW scheme in the northern Al Jouf region - to a consortium led by France’s EDF and Abu Dhabi’s Masdar.
Saudi Arabia could become the region’s biggest wind power market over the next decade, accounting for almost half of the region’s wind capacity additions by 2028. Developers will build 6.2GW of wind capacity in Saudi Arabia – or 46 per cent of the region’s total wind capacity addition – between 2019 and 2028, Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables said in January.

Taiwanese shipping major Evergreen has confirmed its plans to build a total of ten 23,000 TEU containerships.
According to the company’s stock exchange filing, the new vessels will be built at three shipyards ( 6 units will be built by South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries, while two each - at China’s Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding).
Evergreen said that the value of the entire order stands between USD 1.4 billion and USD 1.6 billion. The company opted for the move as part of its fleet optimisation plans.

Coordinated strikes on key Saudi Arabian oil facilities (14.09.2019), among the world's largest and most important energy production centers, have disrupted about half of the kingdom's oil capacity, or 5% of the daily global oil supply.
In a statement on Sunday, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that 5.7 million barrels a day of crude oil and gas production have been affected. The latest OPEC figures put total Saudi production at 9.8 million barrels per day.
Yemen's Houthi rebels on Saturday took responsibility for the attacks, saying 10 drones targeted state-owned Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah news agency.
Key questions about the attacks remain unanswered yet. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pinned the strikes directly on Iran, which backs the Houthi rebels. But he said there was "no evidence the attacks came from Yemen."
"Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply," Pompeo said in a Twitter post.
Experts said that this drone attacks could have a huge impact on oil&gas industry.

Under the MoU, the maritime authorities of Panama and Singapore will cooperate on maritime matters including the promotion of the use and acceptance of ship’s electronic certificates to facilitate port state inspections, the exercise of port state control (PSC) inspections by both countries, as well as personnel exchange.
The deal was signed by Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of MPA Singapore, and Noriel Araúz, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), during a high-level delegation visit to Panama.
“This cooperation will strengthen maritime relations between our two countries. It will also yield significant benefits through speedier port clearances for vessels registered with our two countries calling at our ports,” said Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Health of the Republic of Singapore."

Belgian tanker operator Euronav has signed a service agreement under which Malaysia’s Linggi Port will become its low-sulphur marine fuel supply base. The port would also provide other services, including supplying crews and provisions, for the company’s ships sailing on the East of Suez routes, Reuters referred to a statement released by the port operator.
☑️EIB Provides USD 155 Mn for Port of Piraeus Expansion
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has formally agreed to provide EUR 140 million (USD 154.5 million) to support expansion and upgrade of the Port of Piraeus. The 20-year loan, signed in Athens, will support the implementation of part of investments at the principal port of Greece in a total investment plan of more than EUR 600 million (USD 662 million).
The funding was described as the largest ever loan for port investment in the country by Europe’s long-term lending institution.
