these bacteria may have come to
live within early eukaryotic cells,
leading to the evolution of chloroplasts.

several facts provide evidence for the
endosymbiotic hypothesis. A few examples include:

1) mitochondria and
chloroplasts contain their own circular DNA, similar to DNA in bacteria.

2)Both mitochondria and chloroplasts are surrounded by two membranes;the inner membrane is probably evolved from the plasma membrane of the engulfed prokaryote,
while the outer membrane is
probably derived from the cell membrane of the host.

3)mitochondria are about the same size as bacteria.

4)mitochondria appear to have been derived from purple bacteria, and chloroplasts derived from photosynthetic bacteria.

cytoplasmic streaming carries the vacuole around the cell as the food is digested and low-molecular-weight nutrients pass through the membrane of the vacuole into the cytoplasm.

in fungi, cytoplasm moves freely within cells and, via streaming

one mechanism that powers the movement of the cytoplasm has been studied in Nitella, a green alga. studies of electron micrographs indicate that actin filaments are aligned along the length of the cell.

the cytoplasm may be propelled by myosin embedded in the endoplasmic reticulum.

in the process known as facilitated diffusion, a special carrier protein with a central channel acts as a selective corridor which helps molecules move across the membrane.
these special carrier molecules that form the protein channel bind only to a specific molecule, such as a particular sugar or amino acid.
once the molecule binds to the carrier protein, this protein helps or
facilitates the diffusion process by changing shape and moving the molecule down its concentration gradient, through the membrane into the cell where it is released.
facilitated diffusion is similar to simple diffusion in that both involve movement of molecules down their concentration gradient and this movement is carried out without any input of energy.
however in facilitated diffusion, the movement of molecules will only take place if it is facilitated or helped by a special protein carrier in the
membrane. facilitated diffusion can occur in either direction depending on the concentration gradient.
if there is a higher concentration of the particular molecule inside the cell, the same carrier protein would then transport the molecules out of the cell.
