Spore-forming bacteria grow as vegetative cells and divide by
binary fission when nutrients are available and environmental
conditions are not adverse.
When nutrients are depleted or conditions become adverse, spore
formation is initiated. The DNA condenses and aligns itself in the
center of the cell. The vegetative cell is now referred to as the
mother cell.
Next, the DNA divides into two cpmplete copies and the mother
cell membrane invaginates to form the developing forespore.
The mother cell membrane continues to grow and engulfs the
developing spore. The developing spore is now surrounded by two
membrane layers.
Next, peptidoglycan is laid down between the two membranes of
the developing spore to form the cortex.
Dipicolinic acid is formed inside th developing spore and calcium
enters from the outside. As calcium enters the spore, water is
removed.
A protein coat forms exterior to the cortex and the spore becomes
mature. Some spores form an additional layer called the
exosporium. A mature spore is resistant to environmental
conditions.
Finally, lytic enzymes destroy the mother cell and the mature
spore is released.

can be excised from the bacterial genome.
One type of excision occurs when there are two regions with
identical nucleotide sequences (D', C', B' and D, C, B), separated
by genetic information (A) in the genome.
The two identical regions can pair with each other and form a
transient loop.
Recombination enzymes present in the cell cause the double
duplex to undergo a reciprocal exchange.
The loop is freed from the rest of the DNA molecule and becomes
a free plasmid. Any genes between the duplicated sequences (e.g.,
gene A) are transferred to the plasmid.
A plasmid can reenter the bacterial genome by the same type of
homologous pairing and recombination mechanism that led to its formation.

Most eukaryotic cells follow a process of growth and division
called the cell cycle.These events include a growth stage, mitosis
or nuclear division and cytokinesis or division of the cytoplasm.
Throughout interphase, the cell is engaged in growth and
metabolic activities. interphase can be further broken down into 3
discrete phase called G1, S and G2.
During the G1 or first growth phase, normal cell functions occur
as well as cell growth.
In the S phase, DNA replicates producing 2 copies of eaach
chromosome.
During the G2 phase, the cell continues to prepare for mitosis and
cell devision.
Mitosis or the M phase has four stages, prophase, metaphase,
anaphase and telophase.
During Prophase the chromosomes become visible and condense,
becoming shorter and thicker.
Each identical copy of a single chromosome is called a sister
chromatid. The nuclear envelope breaks down and spindle fibers
forms as microtubules grow out of the centrioles that move to
opposite poles of the cell.
During metaphase, the double-stranded chromosomes line up
along the equator of the cell. The spindle is now fully formed and
the microtubules attach to each sister chromatid.
Anaphase begims when the sister chromatids of each
chromosomes begin to separate.
The centromere that holds sister chromatids together divides and
the chromosomes move away from each other along its spindle
fiber.
In telophase, the two groups of chromosomes reach the opposite
ends of the cell. As a new nuclear envelope starts to form around
each group, the chromosomes uncoil and spindle disappears.
The division of the cytoplasm and organelles is called cytokinesis
or the C phase. The result of mitosis and cytokinesis is the
formation of two genetically identical cells.
To summarize the entire cycle, G1, S and G2 phases occur during
interphase while the cell is growing and preparing to divide.
Mitosis, or the division of the nucleus consists of 4 phases,
Prophase,metaphase, anaphase and telophase and in these phases
duplicate copies of the chromosomes are split equally.
Finally, the cell's cytoplasm divide during cytokinesis and results
in the formation of 2 genetically identical daughter cells.
