🎯One’s Destination is never a Place, but a Journey Toward a New Way of Seeing Things

βœ…Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) Fellow Malikajon Fayzieva from Bukhara State University is currently being hosted by the University of Arkansas. She has been observing courses on, Curriculum Development and Instructional Planning etc.

πŸ“ŒMalikajon says: β€œStudying abroad is about experiencing a foreign country β€” and the most beautiful and important part of a country’s culture is its people. I was amazed by the culture of American people when I had lunch in an American family. Also, I was excited when the University of Arkansas gave me a new bicycle to travel around. For me it is a new concept - walking and cycling are the best ways to get around a city!”

πŸ”ΈMalikajon has also attended the International Students and Scholars team and events, such as ICT and Conversation Club – where she enjoys sharing about her culture and learning about the cultures of other international students and scholars.

🎯Building Sustainability in STEM through UniCEN Exchanges

πŸ”Έβ€œSharing knowledge occurs when people are genuinely interested in helping one another develop new capacities for action; it is about creating learning processes,” says Akmal Safarov.

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ«Akmal is an Associate Professor of the Samarkand State University’s Institute of Engineering Physics (IEP). Through UniCEN project Akmal worked with Professor Michael Short from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on collecting, processing, and analyzing information about radiation, pressure, gravity, and air composition.

πŸ”–Akmal uses his experience, gained during the UniCEN project, to mentor students. One of his students, Nafisa Rahmonova, works on her UniSat project and studies electronics, programming, and 3D modeling under Akmal’s supervision. She uses one of the UniCEN-acquired 3D printers, which is housed in the Nuclear Physics and Astronomy Laboratory of IEP, as a key component of her studies.

❗️UniCEN: Cooperation Begins by Building Trust

βœ…In November 2022, the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (APAPRT) held an international conference on "Local Self-government in the Republic of Tajikistan: Theory, Practice and Development Prospects.” Narxoz University – a UniCEN partner of APART from Kazakhstan – was invited to take part in the conference.

πŸ“ŒDuring the conference, the UniCEN partners signed a memorandum of understanding to extend their collaboration beyond their UniCEN project – which was focused on sustainable development in Central Asia.

πŸ”–Both partners are optimistic about future partnerships and prospects related to internationalization efforts. They report that the collaboration which began during UniCEN gave them the ability to work together on a common vision, common organizational objectives, and common accomplishments.

πŸ”ΈThe UniCEN Program is administered by American Councils and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent.

🎯A journey toward a new way of seeing things

βœ… FEP Fellow Bahriddin Gapporov from Namangan State University is currently being hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire – where he feels at home as he connects with academic staff and student organizations, learns about the best food in town, and does one of his favorite sports – rock climbing.

πŸ”–As Bahriddin notes, heavy snow and cold weather of Wisconsin haven't kept him from enjoying the university life to the fullest. Thanks to class observation and professors' support, Bahriddin learns with the latest methods and practices in use, not to mention a great many spectacular events he has been actively partaking in!

πŸ“Besides methodological and cultural support, he was given a personal office. Bahriddin says: β€œThis simple act of paying positive attention to people has a great deal to do with productivity.” He continues: β€œFEP is an opportunity to see something new, and to see something in a new way”.

πŸ†β€œCollaboration Makes Us Better”

πŸ“ŒOver the past year, Washington State University (WSU), Urgench State University (UrSU), and Kostanay Regional University worked on the joint UniCEN Project β€œSTEM Environmental Technologies Courses for Investigation of Water Flow in the Aral Sea Basin.”

βœ…In order to ensure the sustainability of the project, Dr. Gayrat Urazboev from UrSU and Dr. Sergey Lapin from WSU held a series of Zoom calls to discuss a planned student exchange during the summer of 2023. They also planned for a short course focused on the β€œFinite Element Method” to be taught during the spring of 2023 by Dr. Lapin to students of UrSU online.

πŸ”ΈHaving secured funding for research-related travel from WSU, Dr. Lapin plans to visit UrSU later this year. It is also planned to organize a student exchange program between Urgench State and Washington State.

πŸ”–Washington State and Urgench State believe that individual commitment to a group effort is what has ensured the success of their partnership.
