The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is a chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine. This means that the company took a virus that normally infects chimpanzees, and genetically modified it to avoid any possible disease consequences in people. Prior to Covid vaccines, no adenovirus vaccine had ever been approved for human use in the U.S.
